I gotta say guys, I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. I've got the accesories for my rifle, just waiting for the gun to get here..

I'm going to use a Nightforce rail and Burris Xtreme tactical rings to mount my Leopuld scope. I'm using my Vari-X 3, 4.5-14X40 for now. I was going to get a Burris Eliminator 3, but I think I'm going to save my pennies until I can swing a Nightforce scope, that'll probably be my income tax return 'gift' ;-) plus, I got the Harris Bipod.

Right now, I don't have a reload press yet, but plan to get into that in the near future too. I picked up 100 rounds of ammo, (some Cor-bon's loaded with 142gr HPBT, and some HSM's loaded with 130 Gr Berger hunting VLD's).

I have a couple questions... This rifle has a 26" barrel, which I like, but what kind of velocity differences should I kind of expect with having the longer tube?

Also, before I start shooting, I wanted to check my torgue settings on the action screws, to make sure they were correct, and I want to make sure I was using proper torque on the rings as I mount my glass.

Anybody have any suggestions there?

Thanks for any input guys..

Re: Savage LRP 260 should arrive tomorrow!

No reason to go past 26" in a .260 I have one with a 28" so I know. It's fixing to become a 22" and I'll be happy. Good luck with the new rifle. I bet it will be a shooter

You are going to absolutely LOVE that rifle. However, I don't understand the Burris rings though. For that kind of glass, and that rail and rifle... get some Seekins rings on that thing!!

Trust me, you will be glad you did!! Only Seekins will touch my glass from now on... period!!

z71 make a great point. I've used the cheaper "tactical" rings (XTR, weavers, millett...) but after my first set of seekins, i'll never go back!

Re: Savage LRP 260 should arrive tomorrow!

I liked the design of the Burris rings, they seem to look pretty solid for the price, and they also have allot of surface area to hold the scope... also, I was thinking that I'm going to need to get new rings when I get the Nightforce scope because that'll have a 30mm tube instead of the 1" that the Leopuld has...

I'll check out Seekins for the NF for sure.. :)

Re: Savage LRP 260 should arrive tomorrow!

I'm thinking about getting one of these rifles myself. I like Savage's (have a 10FP in 308)...

I shoot a local match-series each year that is divided into factory and custom. To qualify as a factory rifle, it can't be tuned up or tweaked at *all*. I killed factory class this year with my Sako TRG42 in 338, but lots of people bitched I was kind of cheating (yeah, as if all I had to do was set the rifle up, pointing in the general direction of the target, and the rifle did the rest).

Anyway, trying to decide if I want to get one of these to win the factory class with next year, or move over to custom.

Re: Savage LRP 260 should arrive tomorrow!

Hey guys! I just got behind the rifle today to break it in and get it zeroed..

I gotta say, the build quality of this rifle is top notch in my opinion. I've never owned anything like a custom rifle, this is about as close to that as I'll be getting, for a while anyway.

When I opened the box, the first thing I noticed was the barrel. Holy GOD, the tube on this thing is awesome. I had a Winchester Model 70 Stealth II, and this barrel is definatly thicker than that was. I'm not sure what it has for a taper, but at the muzzle, it is a full inch in diameter.

So I set it up. Mounting the Nightforce rail was a breeze. Nightforce makes great stuff, and this was no exception. Perfect fit, tighted to 25 inch/pnds with blue lock-tite. Perfect.

The Burris rings went on as smooth as the rail. Laying the scope in the rings was a perfect fit. There may be better rings out there, but these, so far, have been holding my scope well.

My scope is a Leupold that I've had for years. It's a Vari-X 3, 4.5-14X 40mm Adjustable Obj. with a fine duplex. I also have a 6" sunshade for it to help with morning/dusk sun, and it also seems to help a little with mirage coming from the barrel if it's warm.

After breaking in the barrel, I was trying to get the gun zeroed. I gotta say, for my gun anyway, 130 Bergers don't fly well. I picked up 3 boxes of HSM ammo, loaded with 130gr Berger VLD's in Remington brass, and they were disapointing, to say the least. 3" 100 yard groups is not a 'group' at all, in my opinion. I was beginning to think I got a bad rifle, or my scope was going bad, until I shot the 142 grainers....

I had also picked up a few boxes of Cor-Bon 142 grain HPBT, loaded in Lapua brass. These shoot ALLOT better. I'm just shooting from a bipod, and at 100 yards, all the holes are touching if I do my part. I couldn't believe the difference in these two rounds. I plan to start reloading down the road, probably this winter I'll be investing in a press as well as the rest of the equipment. So I'll be asking for advice on formulas in a few months ;-) But for now, shooting 'factory' ammo, I guess I can't complain. I'm going to keep experimenting, trying some other 140gr, and the 123 gr scenars too, as I've heard they shoot really well.

Here it is guys..

I don't know why seeing this on the rifle made me hard....

This is a group of 142 grainers.. I moved on the last shot, of course, throwing a flyer..

Congrats. Yes, some tubes don't like some bullets.
A little advice, if you don't mind.

Your rings are a bit high, not terribly so, but a bit. This results in an inconsistent cheek weld, which will open up your groups.

You need a stock pack like this:
http://www.triadtactical.com/Triad-Stock-Pack.html

You may need to build it up underneath with some foam padding, I use the rubberized non-slip drawer liners (available in the kitchen area of the store) IF I don't have to build it up much.
A couple layers under the stock pack may be all that you need.

You should be able to get behind your rifle, get a good cheek weld with your eyes closed, when you open your eyes, you should be looking through your scope without having to lift your head.

Re: Savage LRP 260 should arrive tomorrow!

fdkay, I agree about the hieght. I ordered mediums, but thought they'd be a little lower, I didn't factor in the height of the rail itself, plus the rail has a 20mil slope, and I think that might have had something to do with the higher height to. In the future I was planning on a scope with a 50mm objective, so I think these rings will be fine, but that cheek rest you linked me to is exactly what I was looking at getting. I already had a shortcut to that page saved on my desktop for ordering one of these. I didn't make an order yet, because I shoot lefty, with a right hand action, and they were out of these in Black for left hand. I never thought about using drawer liners to build up more height, I may just do that. Thanks for the advice my friend!

Re: Savage LRP 260 should arrive tomorrow!

That's the rifle I really wanted. My buddy got one and it's IMPRESSIVE to look at. We haven't started getting his ready to roll. I ended up with the Preditor Hunter Max 1 because I wanted a left hand bolt. Covered the build on my blog. Here's a link to the Hide post about it. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to match my accuracy results except that the 6.5 CM ammo from Hornady might be a little better than what's available for the .260 Rem. Part Eight of my series covers the first range trip to test accuracy and get it zeroed.

If you have any questions about accessories for the Savage that I can answer, please let me know. Enjoy your new gun!!
