Definately an experience.

Re: GoRuck Challenge

I had 6 guys from work with me so I wasnt solo at least.

Here's the description it gives on the site:

The GORUCK Challenge is a team event, never a race. Think of it as a slice of Special Operations training where – from start to finish -- a Special Operations Cadre challenges, teaches, and inspires your small team to do more than you ever thought possible. Leadership is taught and teamwork is demanded on missions spanning the best of your city.

You will show up to the start point with water, wrapped bricks, and a rucksack full of anything else you need. You will meet your Special Operations Cadre there, and then it begins. You will stay with your team the duration of the Challenge. Your Cadre will be with you the entire time until the 30 individuals have become one team and earned the GORUCK Tough patch.

And this is probably a better description than I could give:

http://www.gorucknews.com/military/the-goruck-challenge-explained/

The short answer is, your Team is given various 'missions' to fulfill around the city with time hacks to meet (ha!). One guy is designated TL for each mission. You have things to have to carry with you (your ruck, team weight, extra water supply, things the cadre brings for you). And whatever you may be moving from point to point (ammo cans, large containers of 'nuclear material to exfil). Along the way you hav other 'challenges': several team members are down and must be carried, all you ruck straps 'broke' and must be hand carried, etc.

If you dont gel, or you dont make a time hack, you get some 'good livin': ruck sack squats, flutter kicks in the Trinity River perhaps.

This continues until youre finished. Ours went 12 hrs. I have no idea how many miles.

No prob. Its not the easiest site to navigate

Re: GoRuck Challenge

I was planing on doing the Go Ruck depending on how well I did in the tough mudder.

I imagine you can enter solo and they will team you up?

Re: GoRuck Challenge

Your 'team' actually consists of whoever signs up for a given date and time. So unless you sign up with 30 friends, youll be with a mixed group.

The GoRuck goes all over the country so there might be one coming to Colorado soon.

Re: GoRuck Challenge

I did one. These are no joke.

Class 081, Philadelphia. Six bricks in the rucksack plus all your food and stuff.

Started at 10am. 26.23 miles, including a dip in the schuykill river at 3am. It was 34 degrees. Some had signs of hypothermia. We finished at city hall at 2:30 the next afternoon.

Who you get as a cadre (staff) pretty much determines how difficult and how long it will be. Ours was a Naval Special Warfare guy, and he did not come to entertain.

We carried huge logs, each other, and suitcases of cinderblocks all throughout the city. We ran for up to five miles at a time in simulated pilot / ejection seat / intel recovery missions.

My advice for training for one would be legs, legs, legs. Be used to carrying weight for long distances, and be able to run multiple 5 mile segments.

This is the patch you earn if you make it. I think they changed the style now.

I just finished Class 730 in Louisville. Cadre Paul was our instructor and it was a beatdown. Like Fargo said above - legs, legs, legs. We also did a bunch of pushups and overhead presses as well. I made the mistake of wearing my Minimus shoes as I assumed we would be doing a great deal up and down the Ohio River. We spent the entire time pounding the asphalt instead. My feet, knees, and hips officially hate me.

It looks like I am doing another one in November. I plan on walking 6-10 miles 3x per week with bricks and gear for the 4 weeks leading up to it. Aside from that, a high rep low weight squat and lunge regimen would do wonders. To give you an idea, this was my welcome session to kick things off:

Elephant walk for about 400m
100 squats
25m bear crawl
90 squats
25m reverse crab
80 squats
25m lunges
70 squats
25m walk-ups
60 squats
25m lunges w/twist
50 squats
25m spidermans
40 squats
25m sideways moving in a pushup position (don't know name)
30 squats
25m lunges
20 squats
25m grab ankles and penguin walk
10 squats
*chug hot PBR
Ruck over to the fountain, get in and do 15 mins of assorted pushups, shoulder presses with ruck, and flutter kicks.

And of course there was no rest period during this time. My quads, hams, and hip flexors ached due to the amount of lactic acid in them.

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.

Just some friendly advice from someone who has done this for real and has friends that are GoRuck instructors. I don't know how much weight you plan on carrying for those 4 weeks but either way you want to try and avoid peaking before the event. IMHO, your plan above sounds like a good way to burn out/peak and or hurt yourself before the event. Walk enough with the pain bag to toughen up your feet and get used to rucking but don't go crazy with the distances. Continue to do your regular cardio/lifting program with a focus on cardio. I've been to two selection courses in the military and passed both and I didn't walk more than 12 miles a week( 6 miles x2 or any variation as long as it wasn't more than 12 miles in a week) prior to attending. The guys who chose to do 12 milers or more on a regular basis before attending usually showed up with foot issues and or physical issues from over training and ended up sucking hind tit during selection.

So, there is my 2 cents of advice for you, I'll get off my box now. Have fun and train smart. :)

My gym is the first 'accredited' goruck gym in the Philadelphia area. They usually do goruck training every tuesday and thursday night plus sunday mornings. I sometimes do goruck training to keep fit and it can be an ass kicker. They want me to do an event with their team, but I really don't feel like doing SFAS again...again.

It will push you and if you ask me, it's good for the soul.

Fargo, you look different without the facial hair.

Like some here, I thought been there...done that...fuck no I ain't doing it again. I finally caved to my coworkers and ended up going. Plain and simple...it's a "gut check" that any military man will be familiar with. It's never a bad thing to push your limits now and then....no matter the age...although it becomes more difficult at almost 40!

I'm GORUCK Tough and did my first at 41. I'm signing up for the April event in Minneapolis and may travel to do another before then with a friend. Props to anyone else who's earned their patch.

Just finished my first GRC. Santa Cruz. Cold ass water. The pacific in november at night is no joke. You dont need one of their packs, as nice as they are, just a pack that can haul 6 bricks plus anything you might need.
