I have worked up a load with 60 grains of Reloader 17 and the 208 Amax. The 26 inch barrel really likes this load. It's showing over 2900FPS with the Oehler and it has no signs of pressure at this point. I didn't put the exact FPS or the es to avoid any WSM arguments. Here's the thing..I let the wife shoot it and told her what to dial the NF and she was hitting head shots at 350 Yards with it. She loves this rifle and now thinks it will be hers' to go along with her LWRC 223 I got her. I have numerous rifles including a few GAP rifles but I just got it figured out. Not sure if I want to let her have it but it appears it may be in my best interest to let her take it over. I am really impressed with this cartridge and bought 300 rounds of brass just in case it's no longer available.

Re: 300 SAUM with 208 Amax

I don't see this brass going anywhere.
That's the same charge I was using with 210 Bergers in my 24" AR10 300 SAUM, and although I couldn't seat them mag length due to pressure with that charge, I was also getting plenty past 2900 fps single loading them with no pressure.
In a bolt action, with that long of a barrel, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest if you were hitting 2950+. It's a pretty amazing round.

That load will carry a mile NO PROBLEM. I've done it.
The amazing thing though, is that even though the heavy bullets have less wind drift...it's not as much as I would have expected.

At a mile, with 10 mph from 3:00, wind drift difference with 185, 190 and 210 Bergers was less than 1 MOA...and the lighter bullets took significantly less elevation to hit the mark.

I have some 190 grain bergers I could load up and try but the gun seems to really like the 208 Amax. I am going to strech is out a little this weekend and see what it can do.

Save some brass for the rest of us tazman! lol

I would love to do a 300 saum but the 7mm saum i have now is hard enough on the wallet.

How many firings are you getting out of brass?

Re: 300 SAUM with 208 Amax

So far I have loaded the test brass 5 times with no issues. I have been using the same 10 rounds to get the load and seat depth down. The issue is this thing loves 60 grains of RL 17 and the 208Amax. As we know, RL17 can be temp sensitive but I can't find a powder that matches it's velocity close enough. As long as the wife enjoys shooting it, I will keep reloading for her. She can now prep the brass herself so she's contributing!!lol
