Deja Vu
I hate the current optic on my AR15. The problem is, it's a Vortex 1-4x24 Viper PST with the TMCQ MOA Reticle and for $500 plus rings, it wasn't cheap. I thought the reticle would be great but its really just a bunch of shit that gets in the way. I've had a hell of a time just getting it on paper within 50 meters.

What I'm wondering is, should I give the old college try and spend a little more time with it or should I say fuck it (which was my original inclination) and buy a T1?

Re: talk some sense into me please

post a pic of your rifle with your optics please.... can't get on paper within 50meters? just wonering what the heck is going on... i could throw a rock and hit the paper from that distance.

Re: talk some sense into me please

It was the rings, I got that fixed but I'm still not in love with the thing. I feel like a jackass for having this problem on my personally owned weapon but I promise I can shoot haha.

This photo is from July when I was on leave from AFG. Just finished up and back in the states now at least until the summer.

Re: talk some sense into me please

first, it could be your rings as they are not a nice cant style 1pc.... something like a larue LT104. second, your front ring is actually on your front handguard rail when your rear ring is on your upper receiver rail... if you're going to use two rings, then you should try to keep them on your upper reciever. that might be half your battle right there.

Re: talk some sense into me please

can see on my elevated optics platform RRA .223 rifle i have both rings on my upper reciever rail.... your front scope ring should NOT be on your front handguard rail.

if you like to keep your optics that far forward, then you might need a nice canted 1pc mount like what is on my LMT MWS

Re: talk some sense into me please

Wow, I just realized the mounting issue. Also, the LaRue mount has been purchased. I'll be fixing that in December, since I'm currently on the west coast and that gun is in KY. I really appreciate your input. When I can actually put my hands on the rifle again, I'll throw and update on here with some photos if that's something anyone would be interested in.

Also, what do you think about some 77 grain black hills ammo for a plinker rifle that would occasionally be used for killing varmints/ deer? Or at least to have the data on it for a rainy day so to speak.

I feel like a bonehead right now

Re: talk some sense into me please

what is the twist rate of your barrel? you would really need a 1:8 (1 full bullet rotation in 8"), or even faster 1:7.

Re: talk some sense into me please

just make sure you get the correct ring size for your scope as you prob already know this.... as for example, my scope has 30mm tube, so i have 30mm rings...

Re: talk some sense into me please

if it is 1:7, then you should be golden

Re: talk some sense into me please

a 1-4x24 Viper PST should be kicking ass all the way up to 100yards easy.... the scope is really not set up for precision as it is really set up for speed. it is a nice optic if that is your taste in glass. i personally like being sub-moa at 100yards and beyond... not saying you can't do it with a 1-4x24 Viper PST, but it is not designed for sub-moa work. it is geared for speed.

Re: talk some sense into me please

Yep, they're 30mm rings. Also I understand the speed thing. I guess I'm not too worried about sub MOA with 556 because I have a 762 gun with a 3.5x15 NF on it. I'll have to play some more with this bastard. Again, I really appreciate all of your help.

Re: talk some sense into me please

I'll send you some Nikons for your Vortex! Unlike your cluster of a reticle, mine are well cleaned up. Simple duplex and mildot reticles here.. Let me know if you want to trade.

Put that one piece mount on and then sling some rounds at a hundred. Turn off or dim the reticle and give it a try. If your still having trouble zeroing, send it to me, or go to 25 and start fresh on your zero.

Re: talk some sense into me please

As much as I want to fix this thing just because of my pride, the only trade I would make would be for a T1 or H1. That would be an almost instantaneous trade also. I'm trying hard to just fix my bonehead scope/ mount without throwing it all into a pile of trash to get burned.

hell, even a cheap 1pc canted burris pepr mount would prob help you out and give you better cheek weld. </div></div>

This!

You need a proper one-piece mount.

Shoot! And here I was going to offer either an Aimpoint Comp M3 or Comp ML3 with qd forward canted 1/3 cowitness mount either ADM or GG&G in trade. Oh well, I have no T1 or H1.
