thinking about going this way. any worthwhile ones out there for $1-300? not sure this would work for me,so not putting a lot of $ into trying it out. low power with 6x at top end max. 4 would be fine. weight is an issue. have looked at leup vx1,weaver kaspra. any recommendations for cheap side glass? any advice on tryng this out and what has worked for others?

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

Unless the rifle is owned by an employer and modification restricted, you will be better served by replacing the upper receiver with a flattop. This is not difficult and if you don't have the tools you can have a local smith do it. It would take me about twenty minutes tops to swap. Flattop uppers can be had for around $100 and you can usually sell your A1/A2 upper and recover some of the cost.

I have yet to see a carry handle mount that was worth a damn. Irons are more reliable.

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

I have never seen a decent mount that will not vibrate loose on a AR carrying handle, stick with irons or replace the upper receiver to a flattop.

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

I guess it depends on the primary use of the rifle. If it's precision target shooting, yes, the switch to a flattop upper is a good idea.

However, if it's for shorter ranges and plinking cans, use a Colt 3x21 or 4x21, Hakko 4x21 or Izzy El-Op EYA1 3x21 which mounts right to the carry handle.

DO NOT mount the glass on the carry handle. Not only is it a VERY bad method, but it advertises to everyone that you have no idea what you are doing.

Take the carry handle off and use a proper mount on the rail. If you want to easily switch back and forth then use a QD mount like a Bobro. It will return to zero and you can switch and swap until your hearts content.

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

bobro? swithching back and forth and not loosing zero has a lot of appeal. i do want to be able to use both and returning to zero after putting handle back on is iffy at best.

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

Listen to LoneWolfUSMC. He is giving you solid advice. And a properly machined detachable carry handle that is put back in the correct position on the rails of the upper should return to zero as will the Bobro mounts. Hints why F marks exist and if they are not on you rail then you can mark it yourself. Either way what LoneWolfUSMC is telling you the truth and is some advice that should be taken under advisement.

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

i'm not dumb enough not to see the obvious downsides to handle mounting. i do see the truth in what has been said. as far as reference marks on gun/handle,don't see any. is there a link or something that instructs or illustrates the process listed. when i tried to switch back and forth in the past, the pressure used on the handle or riser had to vary. maybe a torque wrench would be needed. just trying to keep KISS as much as possible. thanks for all the sound advice.

Re: scope for AR carry handle mounting

Sell your carry handle and get a flip up sight for the rear. There is absolutely no reason to mount the scope to the carry handle if it isn't fixed.
