Really, there only needs to be 1" to chop off the muzzle end. The chambering process will remove the "belled" portion of the bore on the chamber end.
Still, given the choice, I'll take an extra inch on each end.
Don't forget to consider and factor in YOUR definition of barrel length. Some people think boltface to crown, some people think tenon to crown, some people think recoil lug to crown etc etc. </div></div>
Thanks. My smith has been a little fussy about this in the past and requested I add 2".
The problem is, sometimes the extra 2" really puts the barrel over the standard barrel length charges $$. But, throwing out extra $10-$20 is not a biggie in the scope of a $2,000 project. So, I'll send the barrel maker a drawing of the desired contour and just tell him to add the extra inch to each side. This way there shouldn't be any confusion where the starting point is.
Appreciate your educating me. I'll now be cautious about the different ways folks might measure it.
