My finished 6.5 cal stainless barrel is going to be 26". I intend to have it threaded and have a harrell's brake added to that length too. Ok then, so when I go to order my barrel, how much extra meat do you guys like to start with on each end of the barrel? In other words, if I told you I wanted the finished length to be 26", should I tell the barrel maker to add 1" onto each end, and so then to be providing me with a 28" OAL blank? Is 1" on each end plenty enough excess for most smiths to chuck up and work with?

1" extra on each end is more than sufficient.
Really, there only needs to be 1" to chop off the muzzle end. The chambering process will remove the "belled" portion of the bore on the chamber end.
Still, given the choice, I'll take an extra inch on each end.
Don't forget to consider and factor in YOUR definition of barrel length. Some people think boltface to crown, some people think tenon to crown, some people think recoil lug to crown etc etc.

Thanks. My smith has been a little fussy about this in the past and requested I add 2".
The problem is, sometimes the extra 2" really puts the barrel over the standard barrel length charges $$. But, throwing out extra $10-$20 is not a biggie in the scope of a $2,000 project. So, I'll send the barrel maker a drawing of the desired contour and just tell him to add the extra inch to each side. This way there shouldn't be any confusion where the starting point is.
Appreciate your educating me. I'll now be cautious about the different ways folks might measure it.

No extra needed on breach and at least an inch on the muzzle end. The time an extra long breach is good is so you can get it to fit existing barrel inletting just right. This saves time on inletting.
I don't believe there is any confusion from barrel makers or any qualified gunsmiths on what proper barrel length measurement is. This is more of a garage sale gunsale issue.
