I can afford either, yes one is a mk12 spr clone.

I am having trouble deciding on whether id like a lighter weight dd m4v1 or a mk12 with a sopmod stock. I already have the lower so its just a matter of which upper to bolt up.

Looking for peoples experience/opinion. I know the decision ultimately lies with me.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

The pics look like "Pimp my Gun" mock-ups for two different applications?

It might be easier to make a recommendation if you provided more details on what you will use the rifle for?

For example...range work doesn't really need miles of rail...so why not go for the PRI fore-end? If you won't be shooting surpressed, then why spend out on the Ops Inc mount?

And you may find a 30rnd mag a little hard to accomodate shooting prone with a bipod? Get somne good quality 20rnds if that is what you will be doing.

If you're going to need a bipod, I'd mount it as far forward as possible on the rail...not like the one in your SPR-style pic.

Personally I find the Command Arms modular grips pretty awful quality and uncomfortable....I'd go with something like an Ergo or Magpul MIAD,. Find something that fits your hand and places your hand/finger in the best position on the trigger.

If you've got the SOPMOD, look at adding the SAPR as an adjustable cheekrest.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

Yes the pics are from the pimpmygun site. I like to use it for mock ups of my imagination. It works quite well.

The gun would be used for a lot of different things. Coyotes from 0-400yds. Range time from a bench and standing etc.

I am hooked on miles of rail even if I dont need it I guess. The uppers im looking at are already built so PRI is out of the question as theyre also more expensive.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

I was looking for more of a comparison among the rifle styles versus the components that I quickly threw together.

I know CAA makes crap but the grip is more similar to others on the market designed for careful trigger squeeze.

On the range out to 600 quite easily. I know the ddm4v1 would be struggling at that range without the right optic. With the mk12 I was planning to reload and mimic mk262 ammo.

Both rifles are twisted at 1:7 so heavier bullets will be my hunting and range use. I plan to reload for either rifle as I already do for my 7mm rem mag.

Sierra matchkings 55gr+ is what I was thinking. Excellent at range and on game at the same time. Two birds 1 stone.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

Personally I like the SPK/MK12 style rifles - 18.5" barrel, 1:7 twist using 77gr for the range work.

If you're building it yourself go with a monolithic upper like the VIS3 or Mega Arms with WOA SPR profile barrel/matched bolt. I'd also look at having a side mounted red dot or BUIS (like the Dueck) in addition to your main optic.

But.....the weight, although I prefer it in a precision rifle, may not be ideal for snaps/off-hand shooting or driven/moving game?

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

I wont be building it myself, I am looking at Centurion arms and HCS for the upper.

I know of 1 of each available right now. I really like the mk12 mod1 as well.

I haven't mentioned this and some will balk at it but I like the true-to issued versions best.

I am already thinking about the 45* offset red dot too. I like the idea for close targets.

Weight isnt an issue as im 6'4 210 and in good shape. I do like a lighter rifle though and one thats maneuverable in a vehicle as jumping out and shooting is common when were out looking for coyotes.

I know DD makes great stuff. Its just a matter of pros and cons of each. The mk12 obviously is gonna dent the pocket more.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

Not sure what is wrong with liking the "as issued" clones?

I've only ever heard good things about HCS.

You can always go after a lighter/shorter truck upper for the coyotes later if the MK12 doesn't suit

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

Some don't like military issue anything (government oversight, lowest bidder etc etc). I personally love anything with history behind it. The Mk12 in Operation Red Wings for example. Friend recommended the read from Luttrell and I finished that sucker in 4 days on a deployment recently. Couldnt believe the abuse it took. History and a solid rep sell me.

And with all the same components I cant even match the build prices of these uppers from either company.

I have never heard a bad thing from HCS either.

Think that about seals it. I was originally leaning towards a mk18 but that one has to wait too...

Understood. I am looking for a 1 rifle does it all concept right now since funds are tight.

I've decided to go ahead with the mk12 as well. It'll handle everything I can throw at it with ease. The ddm4v1 is a clean looking rifle tho and would be well suited a lot of what I plan also. The mk12 just does it all better or nearly all of it. I feel.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

I like the mod 0 also but it isn't worth the extra money in my honest opinion. To some it may be but not to me. Talking the full price of a scope in just two uppers difference.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

I can tell you that I bought a DD M4v5 not long ago with a pencil barrel and it freaking rocks. It's accurate and before I put anything on it was the lightest rifle I have ever owned. You would be very surprised how light weight these things are. The only downside is that the barrel heats up fast so that it something to keep in mind. It heats up a lot quicker than a heavy barrel but at the same time it cools off equally as fast so in my mind you can't put as many shots downrange at a time but you have quicker follow ups or less downtime IMO due to the quick heat dissipation.

I also recommend going against having the fixed sight on there if you plan on using an optic or putting a scope on it. I have a lower power Nikon M223 on mine that I love. It did add some weight though.

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

Hey I appreciate the other side of the coin info. Its very tempting to go for the light weight killer but I am gonna go for the mk12. My wallet is begging for mercy but mercy is for the weak. Lol. :cheers

Re: Top or Bottom rifle

I love me some bolt guns! That'd be a sick rifle for the collection. My next bolt gun will be a m40a5 in 243 instead of 308.
