ONCE fired brass question

Re: ONCE fired brass question

Once-fired brass is and always has been a good way to save money to build an initial stash.

Unfortunately you don't know if the first firing was done in a machinegun (7.62) or Squad Automatic Weapon (5.56), where headspace and chambering may have been "Liberal" (sloppy), giving you fat or long cases to work from.

Your best bet would do get some, try small base sizing, and see if it's worth your time and effort. You should get at least three or four firings.

Midway (in Missouri) is probably getting it from the Defense Reutilization and Management Office (DRMO, the military's surplus brokers) at Fort Leonard Wood. Most likely that brass was fired from basic training M16s, with some of it coming from SAWs supporting engineer and MP advanced training.

Re: ONCE fired brass question

It's not a bad idea. That's about all I fire in my AR-15. Over the years I've scrounged quite a bit of used .223 Rem brass at the range. When I got my AR, I already had a supply of brass.

Using ammo you already have, measure the length of your fired brass to the shoulder (Hornady & Sinclair make gauges for this that attach to your calipers). Resize your own brass 3-4 thousandths shorter. Resize once fired brass from other sources the same amount or just a touch more. Or you could just get a Wilson Case Gauge for .223 Rem and make sure the newly sized cases fit in that.

EDIT: When I say "Resize once fired brass from other sources the same amount", I mean to resize it the same as your other brass. Not to size it 3-4 thousandths from its unfired length. It should be .003-.004" shorter than brass already fired in your chamber.

Re: ONCE fired brass question

1X fired is a good deal, just keep in mind you'll have to tumble, size and trim it so it takes some extra elbow grease. I sent you a PM where I get my brass from.

The LC LR 308 stuff doesn't seem to be, the rest of it is.

+1 on Brassman (Scharch). I've used them for 12yrs for once fired fully processed 223 and 308 brass. You'll need to cull a handful from each thousand but for once fired fully processed Lake City brass, they're hard to beat.
