I know the Avg velocity for a .223 out of a 16" barrel is about 3100fps. Well, I chronoed the same ammo out of a 10.5" Barrel. The velocity was 2250 +/-..
Im thinking about reloading some .223 for my 10.5" barrel. Should I go with the standard load that will give people that 3100fps out of a 16" Barrel or try and tailor a load for the 10.5" Barrel? I would think that by cutting down on the powder, I will get a complete burn before the bullet exits the Barrel and elminate ALOT of the muzzle flash.

Just seeing what you guys think.

Re: .223 reloads question

You should actually look to faster powders rather than reduced loads. You'll probably be in experimenter's "at your own risk" territory.

I'm not sure where Reloader 10 sits on the scale of speed, but H335 is one of the fastest of the common 223 powders. You might also try H322 or H4198 or even Reloader 7, which is starting to get into pistol powder territory. Even Lil Gun and H110 would probably be pretty good.

Re: .223 reloads question

In my burn rate chart it is, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. But it sits roughly between H110 which is a slow pistol powder and H335 which is a fast-ish rifle powder.

Re: .223 reloads question

Out of the 7.5" barrel with 55gn bullets im getting 2050fps. Same loads out of a 14.5" barrel are 2500fps. So im loosing around 500 fps with a really short barrel. But that load is very accurate in my gun. I use it for home defence & a truck gun. With vortex red dot im hitting 8" steel easy at 200 yrds. It will put 10 shoots in a inch at 50 yrds. Im happy.
