I have a SS 5-20HD.
Felt like there has been an issue when I change power on the scope.
zeroed in on 8x. perfect. dialed a .1 mil up, perfect.
Then changed to 14x. shot left 1.5" or about .14 left. then dialed up a .1 mil still left .14mil and only up .05 mil. So some can be the gun. But it is consistent that the windage is off when I change power. I have always felt it did not shoot the same if I change the power. Now I am convinced of it. Is this standard in FFP.
I did not know if it could be because of the mount. (Leupold steel rings.

Re: Zero shit when changing power on FFP

Its not the fact that its FFP its more likely the variable power aspect.

What I usually do with a variable power scope is set up at 50 yds ( to guarantee good hits ). Srart with the low power setting, shoot two or three rds and each power setting. See if there is consistent variation in the hits.

If you have variation, call the mfg'er and see if they can assist.

To the OP, the point of impact should not change when going through the range of magnification. It could "appear" to change with a FFP scope as the size of the reticle changes. If indeed the zero is wandering during changes in magnification, something is amiss.

Re: Zero shit when changing power on FFP

I was shooting at 300 yards. And I do adjust the parallax. Issue was that when I when up to 14x the impact was left. moved back to 8x and they were on target.
I don't think it has anything to do with FFP or SFP. But there was a post on SFP and did not want to post in their thread. It is hunting season and don't plan on too much testing.
I will try some test at 50 yards and see.

how much does the eye relief change when you move up/dowwn the magnification scale. You should catrch yourself moving just perceptibly forward as magnification increases.
IIRC those units have a huge eye box and to be consistant you need to be set up in the front of it or the back of it consistantly.

Re: Zero shit when changing power on FFP

Shot 60 rounds from 100 to 300 yards today. Found the scope had gotten a little loose. Found it when things started to get worse. Only had time to shot 6 rounds by the time I re-tightened the rings. But they seemed to be right on now.
I have always made sure of the parallax. Just did not think of the rings getting loose.
Thanks for everyone help.

Get a good torque wrench and properly mount and torque your rail and rings. While you are at it do the same for your chassis or stock. Write is all down so you have consistent POI.

HTH!

Re: Zero shit when changing power on FFP

It may also be a subconscious issue. With the lower magnification the target appears smaller forcing you to focus more on your fundamentals. We had a shooter here that could pass one of our quals to save his life when we where using the regulation sized dot but when we cut the dot size in half all other variables the same his groups shrunk down significantly to where he was good to go.
