Only NV I ever used was night shoots while in the Corps, never used anything else. When it comes to 1st Gen vs 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I don't have the money for anything high-end, but I don't want to get junk, either. Are the 1st/2nd generation scopes worth the $500-$700 I can afford to spend? Really all I'd be using it for is the occasional coyote hunt. With that purpose in mind, should I go for a whole scope, or is there a sort of NV attachment I could get that would fit onto a regular rifle scope? Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

Re: Question about NV scope use for coyotes

I had a gen 1 500$ ATN scope, it was fun to play around with but actual usefulness was limited to say predator control with a 10-22. Really you have to spend over 3k to get something useful. Most or all of gen 1 or 2 will be Russian and it's just not that great.

BTW I've used mil night vision particularly the newer goggles they give the helicopter pilots that do downed pilot rescue and the difference between them and the 1k or less dollar stuff is astounding. But then you are talking 10k for that kind of night vision tech.

Re: Question about NV scope use for coyotes

Predator and feeder lights are the only cheaper solution worth using IMO. Otherwise gen3 gear ($$$)
I also sprinkle flour on the ground for hogs to sillohetee them better.
Fwiw ive seen a lot of gen 3 rentals on craigslist and simular

Re: Question about NV scope use for coyotes

I gout a ziess fero z 51, they are based on gen 2 technology and in use by german forces today. It's a complete scope and it is AMAZING!! Paid $600 comes with issue case as well. This thing lets you make out white steel plate 16"x20" in complete darkness at 400 yards(I'm talking cloudy at midnight in the country far from city lights). With some stars out you could pick off any part of a persons body at 400 yards, with the moon out you can see people over a 1000 yards away. Anything under 200 yards is just incredible in any lighting condition. I have this attached to my PTR MSG91 for night time coyote hunting. Needless to say not many people know about this item and you got to keep your eyes open for it, I'll be buying another one.

Re: Question about NV scope use for coyotes

Thanks for all the help, I'll definitely check into that Zeiss. I just don't have the money, or even the desire to spend anything over $1000 even. $10k toys only come after the Powerball win, hahaha...
