This is why we practice shooting at smaller targets at longer ranges. My son and I were in the blind yesterday and after watching several does and another buck feeding at around 200y, we saw this big boy jump the fence.

I ranged it at 230y and told my son. He went right to his aiming point, approx 8" drop with 130sp, moving at 2660fps. After getting relaxed and calming down, he made the shot. Perfect shot that went into the heart. Deer went 15 feet!

Gun is new 20" Mossberg Super Bantam ATR- youth in .308 (1:10 twist) using my handloads WIN brass, WIN primer, Hornady 130SP. Recovered bullet is below. Retained 70% of mass (92.5gn). Not bad for a $350 rifle and Nikon 1" 4-14 Buckmaster optic.

Good advice from several guys on here in teaching your kids to shoot. Don't just hammer big steel targets. Make it a challenge and extend their range. My son had not shot this rifle past 150y, but was able to understand the drop and make a precision shot in field conditions.

Good job dad. I grew up shooting lava rocks with my dad we would set up and call eachothers shots(300-600yrd) until the pieces were to small to see. Was great training that was fun as hell. Tell your son congrats on a monster.

Impressive!!Good job on teaching but also, on selecting a rifle/bullet combo appropriate for the size of the shooter.I'm a little jealous as I didn't get to go deer hunting until I was 40 and I still haven't shot anything that nice.:)

It took quite a while to pick the rifle. Everyone will tell you to get a .243 and I know tons of folks who still use the very versatile 243 cartridge, but I did not want to get another set of dies. Plus, I already had tons of 308 brass and with the 1:10 barrel he can shoot larger heavier bullets as he gets older.

Powder choice is critical. The felt recoil difference between H4895 and Varget at the same velocity was dramatic. You may not notice if you are 200lbs but a 75lb kid notices. With the right loads, it does real well and is 1 MOA or less at 100y.

The stock is the only weak link and in the off season, I am going to bed it and see if we can stiffen it up a bit. I am also going to give the barrel a bit more room to avoid contact. It is adjustable to a full size stock.

Highly recommend this rifle. Price is awesome. Trigger is adjustable, action is smooth, accuracy is good.
