I'm doing a lightweight .308 AR build - 16" barrel using a midlength gas tube. A 9" handguard will save a few ounces but leave the gas block exposed. I'm using a low-profile adjustable so not like I'd mount anything on the gas block. Is it better to cover it? Is it even something that needs protection?

Related question: Is a 9" handguard enough to provide decent hand positions? I doubt I'd ever put a bipod on, but seems a 12" would be much better then.

Re: Cover gas block?

I wouldn't be worried as much about damage as much as movement of the gas block. I'd get the gas block pinned or have the barrel dimpled to help secure the gas block.

I'd recommend Steve at ADCO for that.

Regarding having enough real estate on your rail:

Depends on your grip with your support hand. 9" might not be enough of you use the Costa-Magic-Sword grip but should suffice otherwise.

Handuard length is a matter of preference. Leaving the gas block exposed is no biggie. Make sure the gas tube is covered or it'll only be a matter of time until you find out how hot they get!
