I'm looking at getting rings to put my Bushnell HDMR on an AR.

What height rings should I go with? Will the Seekins high model work? I also have Butler Creek flip ups on the scope, so that adds a little more height required.

The AR Highs(1.45") should work. With an AR you need to worry not just about the scope not hitting the rail but also your head position behind the scope which will be higher. This is why most AR mounts are taller than standard rings used on rails on bolt rifles.

Your other option if the scope was to be mounted on both an AR and bolt gun is to use standard High(1") Seekins rings and a riser on the AR.

Re: HDMR on an AR, ring height?

For 34mm rings, assuming a 60mm total bell size and adding 3mm additional for the BC covers...my math says you need rings with a minimum height (base to bottom of the ring) of 0.571" (or roughly 14.5mm) or 1.24" (31.5mm) if measuring to the centerline of the ring. I think for the 34mm rings, that equates to Seekins extra highs.

The above assumes you are mounting on a monolithic rail. If not, you can probably go lower than 0.571"/1.24" as you don't have to worry about the bell clearing the monolithic rail.

Don't forget though that just because your scope will clear the rail and won't interfere with mounting with a certain ring height doesn't necessarily mean that will be the "ideal" height for the rings as mounting optics on ANY AR generally requires a somewhat higher mount to get behind the optic properly.

You need the Seekins 1.45 rings. Ran that exact setup on my OBR. Had a set posted in the sale section but just traded them for a set of low Seeking rings.

Re: HDMR on an AR, ring height?

Got out the calipers, with the BC flip ups on, the diameter of the objective is 2.59". So I need about 1.3" of height at the centerline of the rings. Dammit, looks like the 1.25" rings are going to be just a bit too low.

So yep, 1.45" rings it is. Thanks guys.

Re: HDMR on an AR, ring height?

Definitely high rings in the 1.4"+ range. I mounted the HDMR to my AR and my Near 1.35" rings felt a little low.

Must warn you, the HDMR made my AR feel too uncomfortably heavy.

If i had standard rings, the front one would definitely be mounted to the free float rail.

Re: HDMR on an AR, ring height?

I dislike Larue mounts, damn things are a pain to adjust, there's nothing Quick about swapping it from rail to another if the rails aren't the same dimensions.

Jerseymike makes a good point, I forgot I need to have the scope thrown forward more on an AR than on a bolt gun, so thanks for the reminder.

That said... I guess I could just use the ADM Recon mount I already have, instead of going to conventional rings.
