I am a backyard shooter, and need advice on a spotter.
What would be the best bang for my buck @500-600 price range?

I have no experience with these , but would like to see splash and such on target at 500-800 yards

Thanks

Re: Spotting scope

Others might not agree but my luepold 30x varible compact fits my needs nice. I can use the lower power more than the higher alot and the compact size is nice. I keep it in my pack all the time. It does't have a reticle although I wish it did but its clear, small, light, and tough. Good enough for me. Good luck

Re: Spotting scope

If environmental and atmospheric conditions are perfect then only scope listed above that could do the job is the Pentax PF80 ED and only at 500 yards. There is no single scope available now that will allow you to see bullet holes at 800 yards.

In the price point that you are wanting I hear that the bushnell legend is a great scope for the money, keeping it with in your budget.

Re: Spotting scope

I use the Bushnell Legend 20-60 80mm, which is great scope for the money, but still difficult to see bullet holes at 500 yds even in perfect conditions. Also use my March FX 5-40 56mm rifle scope for spotting when shooting with my son, but still hard to distinguish hits at 500 yds. For > 500 yds a remote camera is the ticket and not that hard to set up. Painted steel targets (white marking paint over black paint) also good option for shots over 500.

Re: Spotting scope

Whatever you do, don't get a Barska!! but you already knew that.
Lots of good reviews on Konus for a good scope that won't break the bank.

I have a 20-60x80 Legend as well. With ED glass, it's got amazing optics for the money, but it is big and heavy.

Re: Spotting scope

If you don't mind a big scope, watch eBay for a used Celestron UltimaED 100 (or 80). This is the older equivalent of the current regal model that goes for about $700 new. I just got a used one for $330 delivered (typically see them go for about $500). It is about 20" long and 5.5lbs. Big mother and needs a decent tripod to hold it. 22-66x. Just used it at a match this past Sunday and was really happy with it out to 900 yards. Could easily see individual impact marks and splash on a painted 24" diamond plate @885yds. Still need to see how far out it will let me see .308 holes in paper. It is not a Kowa, but it also was not more than my rifle. Much better than the similar sized Konus and base model Vortex scopes other guys had.
