hey fellas...i'm new to the site, and admittedly new to long range shooting so forgive my ignorance if it makes itself visible...of all my rifles, for some odd reason i absolutely fell in love with my 788 rem. 6mm..best i can tell it was made around '64...my 6 and i have slain many a coyote and i figured it was time to give my baby an upgrade...stainless krieger rem. varmint contour barrel (24")...spiral fluted (i know that doesn't help me in regards to practicality but it's for asthetics)...putting her in a laminate stocky's stock, and topping it with a VX3..i would very much appreciate barrel twist suggestions as i still have to order one...you guys are far more knowledgeable than i am so i am hoping you will be kind enough to offer advice...i intend to shoot hornady 95 gr. sst as i always have...primarily a coyote gun, with possibility of muley...i am not a 1000 yard shooter...i'm simply not that good..i'm a 500 yd. shooter if wind is minimal...i just want to make sure the gun outshoots me which shouldn't be difficult as i'm not a bench rest guy...does 1:8 and a 24" barrel seem right?

thanks for any help...i value the opinions of those much more knowledgeable than me

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

thank you...i've read all sorts of things..i have no desire to shoot lighter than 95...they are great on yotes, and could drop a muley...i'll stick with the 1:8..thanks again for the reply...i'll try to post pics when it's all put together

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

one more question....my 6 will be assembled and nearly ready to roll this coming week...we are taking a 4 hour trip to nashville basspro next weekend to get some glass on it...now...i know that this has been hashed out a million times online and everything i've read always ends up straying way off topic...the simple question that i have and i want your opinions as you guys are serious shooters...i'm in the classic zeiss vs. leupold conundrum....however, to simplify things...i am looking for one thing and one thing only...both have suitable glass and trackability...i get that....the ONLY thing i'm concerned with is durability...i don't want to ever replace this scope...it will ride it the truck...it may get bumped around a little....all i want is to pick it up and not worry about it holding zero after such things....ever....that's it...not concerned with any of the other aspects that eat up internet space in this debate...any informative contributions would be greatly appreciated...personal experience would be outstanding...anyone shot 5000 rounds on either/or and dropped it off your roof and had it hold zero? also...both warranties are great...i understand that too...i want the one that i won't have to dismount and send it for warranty claims

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

I personaly like the Conquest over the Lupy in their price ranges. I have used many of each over the years and now tend to get the Conquest over the Lupy now. They both have a great warranty and nothing is carved in stone that something may not happen to either 1 in time.

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

I would give the nod to lupy vx3.
Have ownd both and tbink the vx3 is more durable.
I would also suggest a scope with a mildot or similar reticle.
nice to have both hold over and lead on moving coyotes

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

thank you...optics are a secondary concern for me...i've killed a ton of coyotes looking through a simmons without feeling any handicap...just want the toughest scope i can get...264, i grew up thinking leupold was the cadillac, but have read all sorts of things..i'm probably still somewhat biased from childhood though...do you have any personal experiences that attest to its durability?...everything i've found says zeiss has better glass....however, glass takes a distant backseat to durability for me...most say both hold up well though

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

I would have to agree with the zeiss being more clear.
But imho the vx3 is more rugged. Partucularly the turrets.

I also thought leupold was as good as it got until I got my first Nightforce.
Dont know if you have a buget or not but there is no question that a nightforce
nxs is more rugged than either a lupy or zeiss.

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

Not sure if you've thought of this but a 30mm tube on the Leupold versus a 1" on the Conquest is a pretty big advantage on a coyote rig too. Just a thought.

Good luck.

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

I've owned Leupy's for a longtime an have been satisfied with them. Minor issues on occasions but CS has always been good IF it was ever needed.
.
Depending on how much adjustment you need you may want to look into the Trijicon options as well. They are VERY clear and do well in the low light.

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

1in8 will give you a lot of range in weight if you wanted to go to a heavier bullet my 6mm with a 1in10 will not stabilize over 100gr so I think you choice will be a good one

Re: building 6mm coyote rig...have questions

i appreciate all the help i have received and it has had a substantial effect in my decision making....i have a 1:8 twist spiral fluted krieger barrel on a thumbhole laminate stock...pillar bedded with a 2.5 lb. trigger, topped with a leupold vx3L...on a rem. 788 action...it is done...i pick it up tomorrow morning after the gunsmith test fires it...200 yd. sight in is to follow tomorrow afternoon....i may have been hasty and started snatching up my favorite ammo too soon...i have 13 boxes of hornady 95 gr. superformance....the old 6 loved it...this is a new barrel, different twist, bedded, etc....hopefully the new setup will shoot it...otherwise i have a chunk of ammo for a gun that not alot of guys own..gunsmith also told me that the "go gauge" for headspace was tight, but assured me that's what i wanted if i was shooting factory ammo....any truth to this? or is there an issue i should be aware of?
