Hey guys I am new to the forum just wanted to say hey. I have been a shooter for a long time but mostly handguns and shotguns. About three months ago a buddy took me out shooting with his savage 7mm and I hit a target at 600 yards and I have been hooked like you would not believe! So a couple of buddies and myself have been buying and putting together a couple of rifles. I bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint .308. I bought this rifle as a starting point to build a custom rifle.
So here are some thing I have bought for this rifle build:
A Harris bipod
Badger Ordnance M5DBM (on its way)
Manners MCT5A stock in the gap camo pattern
smile.gif

A Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 6.5-20X50MM FFP M5
Leupold Rings
I also just sent my bolt out to Badger to have a tactical Bolt put on.

So, I have ordered all this stuff and I am so excite to get it all together I can hardly wait... I will post some pictures as the project comes along. I have a local gunsmith that is going to bed the stock. I also am thinking about putting on a muzzle break, not sure yet but thinking about it. I am also thinking about upgrading my trigger but not sure what to go with. Eventually I will have the action pulled and trued and put a custom barrell on and then the build will be done. I am going to become the best shoot I can on this stock barrel first before I upgrade the barrel.

Also one of my friends is getting into reloading and I am building some rounds, any recommendations for reloads as far as bullet and powder combo's? Stock 26" barrel 1 to 12 twist for .308.

okay well I was going to upload a picture but I guess I need to figure out how to do that as well, haha I am to tired. I will post some picutres as the come up.

Re: So the journey begins.....

thats the right i put together for my wife.. changing it around lil right now....

they love 49 gr imr 4350 in mil case 168 smk cci BR2 and play with the over all length alittle shoots .5 moa all day long with the load

Re: So the journey begins.....

There are many loads for 308s on the reloading section. For a 1/12 twist, I recommend 150-155gr bullets. I'm sure that you'll find plenty of literature out there. If in doubt, use R15 or Varget in the Newberry OCW procedure to find a charge weight, then play with seating depth. If you mill out or dremel the feed ramp scallop, you can load longer rounds closer to the lands, which may shrink your groups considerably.

Re: So the journey begins.....

Any reason you didn't go with the Manners/Badger minichassis?

I think you may be surprised at how once you get the stock and DBM put together and combine that with the weight of the varmint barrel you should not see a need for the break. Recommend definitely shooting it all together first and then see how you feel.

As for triggers. The Timney is a nice option. Have positive experience with one myself.

Re: So the journey begins.....

good question, I was talking with a local gunsmith/ex cop, now builds rifles for local swat teams and long range comp guys, he was saying that he did not recommend the mini chassis because if you toque down the rear bolt and losen the front the action will actually lift a little bit. meaning that your action is secure to the stock but the stock and chassis is also putting tension on the action. He feels that the action needs to be supported and free of tension or stress to function to it full potential, well that is what he said so I went with it....
you are probably correct about not needing the muzzle break, I will get every thing together first and see how it shoots. I was going to have him adjust the stock trigger but you are saying go with the timney instead? I guess if I save money on no break I can afford to do a trigger job, what about a Jewell trigger I have heard good things about those....
TO many options.... Thanks for the input. I hope that clarifies about the chassis, he explained it much better.

Re: So the journey begins.....

THanks for the heads up man, I acutally just ordered some R15 at the local shop so I will load up some rounds and hope they work well.
THanks again.

Re: So the journey begins.....

From what I experienced with the Rem trigger. My 700 came with an X-mark Pro. The gunsmith I went to have "tune" the trigger down to 3lbs said the lowest he could get it to was 4lbs. This same gunsmith was the one who installed the Timney and it does function well and feels nice and crisp. The other benefit that <span style="font-weight: bold">I</span> liked was the wider trigger shoe on the Timney.

I guess I would say is talk to your gunsmith and see what he thinks he can do with the trigger you have and go from there. He might be able to do something more with the trigger that the smith I went to was able to.

Re: So the journey begins.....

So got the stock in today, love the look... but I think I am going to have to return it. I ordered the T5 and for some reason my hand is just to big for the thumb hole, a little to uncomfortable, I think I am going to have to wait for the T4A... I tryed it out before and it was okay not sure why this one just a little to small, totally bummed!

Re: So the journey begins.....

I talked to the good people over there at Manners today and they shipped the stock back to them and I placed an order for the MT4A this time. It will be 16 weeks but worth the wait. My leupold scope will be arriving shortly. pretty excited about that.
Above I mentioned that I was thinking about putting on a holland muzzle break, the local gunsmith charges $300 for the break and install. But I was thinking, with the heavy barrel, new stock, new bottom metal, and heavy scope, the kick on a .308 will not be all that bad with all that weight on there (I am trying to make it friendly for the wife to shoot), so thinking about spending that money on a trigger job, or replace the factory mark X pro trigger. Any thoughts on that or suggestions on trigger options. Thanks
Sean

Re: So the journey begins.....

So went out to the range today with a buddies gun (my rifls is still in pieces and waiting for stuff to come in), 700 target tactical .308 with a night force 4.5-15, with some loads I worked up for my rifle, thanks to some advice from you guys thanks! I worked up a 175 SMK, 45 gr. varget.

Well here is how it went today:

Well I am hooked for sure now and looking forward to getting my rifle together and shooting better than this, thanks again for all your help with the load!

Re: So the journey begins.....

not bad shootin, and can't wait to see how yours turns out, i was in a debate over that gun or the 5R, but ended up getting the 5R

Re: So the journey begins.....

thanks minarix, I thought about the 5R as well, I went the this way so I would not feel to bad about replacing almost the entire rifle! haha, I am excited to see what how my rifle turns out as well, I hate the wait for rings, bases, and stocks.... Happy shooting and happy new year!

Re: So the journey begins.....

Cool to hear the update. Quick question for you as I can't tell. Have you had a chance to get your Remington out as it came from the box?

Reason I ask is that when I got my 700 I had some major issues with the chambering and had to send it back a couple times before things were straight. So needless to say I made the mistake (and lesson learned) of getting the break on, trigger and stock together only to have to keep playing musical stocks before if it was set. Just hate to see you do all the work only to have to go through that process.

Re: So the journey begins.....

Sorry to hear about all your problems. I have not had any problems with it at all. I took it out and broke the barrel and it shoot well. I hope it works out for you, the stock is crap, I would highly recommend you replace the stock as an upgrade. Happy shooting.

Re: So the journey begins.....

Sean, Good to hear you've had a chance to get it out and that yours actually shot well first time. Yeah guess I didn't make much sense. I had bought a Manners just like you and it was the first thing I had done but difference was I put the stock on before firing. Hence the having to switch stocks back and forth. Yeah everything is finally working pretty well now so its all good. Good luck. You will love the Manners once its all together. Incredible stocks.

Re: So the journey begins.....

Well, a quick update I got the scope in and its mounted on temp. mounts as the mounts I ordered are backordered, I dont have the stock but I am going out today with a couple of different rounds worked up and going to really fire my rifle for the first time. I will post some pictures and results later today or tomorrow.
