I've got an opportunity to get over 1k pieces of brass for free, but I am not sure what they are from the head stamp I know it's lake city 7.62 . I'm guessing there blanks? Are they usable?

To me it looks like there is dimples on the primers, they didn't go off.
I'm picky as far as getting stuff, esp brass for free. I'd walk.

I haven't looked at the brass, according to the guy they were fired at an army range and then swept up and someone gave it to him.

They are blanks. They, in their usual load configuration don't produce enough pressure to operate the MG's action. Usually a blank firing adapter is necessary. Problem: we don't know whether the case has the same tensile strength characteristics of regular ammo.If you want to know, you could cut the "bullet" off, expand the neck and trim to length, seat a bullet and see if the thickness is within specs for regular ammo, then reload one to your normally used load. Measure the case head across the base. Chamber the round and fire with a long string. If YOUR RIFLE survives, measure the after fired case head expansion. If less than .001" then it is probably ok. If the rifle blows up, then let us know so we have the definitive answer.

    Right, they are blanks.
Not ever designed to survive anything other than low pressure and having a rim hard enough to extract and eject properly. Don't waste your time, equipment or health by trying to reload anything other than more blanks with them. If you are getting them for free, their only value is selling them for scrap.
