I just found my brother's (RIP) Ruger Single Six revolver hiding in the attic under a bunch of blown insulation. Most of the blue is gone and there is scattered very light pitting.

It only has sentimental value now, so refinishing it isn't going to hurt its collector value.

Does anyone have a favorite shop that can smooth things out and reblue it without rounding every corner on a buffing wheel? I figure a matte blue job would look better because I doubt the pits, no matter how small, can be cleanly removed.

I'm in the Colorado Springs area if there's a shop within 100 miles, or I don't have a problem sending it to someone.

Many thanks,
Richard

Try dropping it off at CST, atleast since they are graded on the work, they will do a decent job, and in the hands of someone who has some patience, a lot if not all of the pitting can be polished out. Anytime I blue a revolver I do most of the work by hand because I have a smeared letter and a broken edge.
Radisu first- flat last!

I don't know how they do it at CST now but when I went through 20+ years ago a lot of us had a full set of Gesswein Stones that we used for high grade stuff. Unfortunately the majority of the blue jobs that came in through the front office went straight to the buffers and never saw the stones. Be specific about your expectations if you go that route.

I much appreciate these tips and suggestions, particularly about being *very* specific if I talk with CST.

I'm beginning to think that CST was the gunsmithing school my brother attended, probably in the late 1950s. I shall have to ask.
