What's the best scope you can buy for a $1,500 budget?

Edit to add:

Intended use is benchrest / prone paper puncher out to 1,000. Prolly 6.5 Creedmoor on XLR chassis. Still spec'ing out my build.

I own an HDMR and while it isn't perfect, it is nearly perfect and that is hard to find for prices around $1200!

You can definitely save some cash if you go used. All of these are great choices, I would add vortex to the list.

Since your edit,

Might want to take a look at Sightron and Nightforce BR. They both have models with higher magnification and reticles for BR. This year Sightron came out with a few new reticles and I believe I read Nightforce came out with a newer, higher mag model as well. The Nightforce will likely be more beastly but Sightron is no slouch

I'ed probably get into a high magnification nightforce for bench rest in that price range.

A used Nightforce in mint condition.

If new, my vote goes for the DMR.

I have had a NXS and prefer the HDMR. The glass the same quality and the reticle choices are better in the HDMR with first focal plane and more magnification. Good luck and good shopping.

Personally, FFP would be the last option I would want on a paper puncher. Reticle gets too big. Sightron SIII glass is at minimum as good as nightforce. Nightforce is built like a tank, but you pay for it. If its just a range gun, can you justify the extra for Nightforce?

Drop a couple more bucks and get a NF NXS 5.5-22 with the CH 2 reticle. For your purposes, you do not need a fancy reticle.

When I was putting together my rifle I picked up a nightforce NXS 5.5-22, to date I have no complaints and would buy it again.

You could get a Nightforce BR scope brand new for under $1500.
