Gunsmithing Bedding M1A in a McMillan stock with rear pillar

A write up for a mini project I just finished up. I took a brand new Springfield M1A super match / wood stock and bedded it in a McMillan stock and pillar bedded the rear lug as well.

A LOT of pictures and it give you an idea of whats involved if you want to bed your rifle or what you need to do to a McMillan stock to fit it you your rifle.
I used the coat hanger method to set the bedding pressure~ MUCH easier to do IMHO.

Love it. Mines sitting in a Mac M3A. I am the second owner and was told that GAP did the bedding. Its a Loaded model. Now what I have been told is that at some point I might need to skim bed it. Seeing that its not a rear luged receiver does the coat hanger method still work. Funny thing, I'm also quite handy with the Lathes and Mills and thought whay couldn't I make a lug for the receiver. Not as big or robust at the one that came with Yours but just something to "help". And from experience "read that, lack of" is there enough meat for me to attach said lug. I'm not planning on doing this but just thoughts/questions that need answers. My project as of now is finding out if the front left side of the M3A has enough meat to add a GrovTech fluch cup for my Tab sling, note- my rifle is scoped and built for such long range things that might need addressed.
Anyways loved the Post and thanks for the confodence bust to tacle this in the future, kinda makes me wont to find and old wood stock just to practice on. Also My handle is ArcherM1 on M14forum.

Usually the pillar helps when you tap the lug and bolt the action in.

That is one of the best pieces or work I've seen..I have the same McM stock sitting on my shelf. One day I'll send it off to get it installed.

Except for the tapped lug, is there a significant difference between an M1A bedding and a Garand bedding?

If so, what are the differences?

If you REALLY wanted to add a lug its possible but not the holy grail of mods. I feel it makes the bedding last longer but not the magic bullet for accuracy. It increases surface area of the bedding and makes a better anchor point for securing the action.

IMHO a rear lug for full benefits should be threaded but you see the added work involved in doing so.

The coat hanger trick is excellent for setting front end tension.
If you are only skim bedding small areas you may not need it. If you clear bedding away that your action drops in your stock I would use something to set the barrel tension.

The Garand uses a different method / fixture to set forearm pressure. Very similar after that. The other item that comes to mind is clearing the front most handguard metal and NEVER picking up a NM or accurized Garand from the front handguard.

Thank you. Hmmmm. So there's something about the forearm, huh? Where can I find out? I searched and uncovered some material but it was either 40 pages of gibberish or too meager to be helpful. Not to hijack your M1A thread. Pm me if you wish.
