Test: bolt action or simi auto

Re: Test: bolt action or simi auto

In reference to the link of professional shooter, whether a semi auto or bolt action is better for long shots.

A .300WM bolt vs a 20" .308 semi isnt really apples to apples brother.

As a former owner of a .308 DPMS SASS, I will say while it is a perfectly functional rifle, it will not stand up to any of the quality bolts I have owned. The link you posted is 2 1/2 years old and since that time precision semis have made some advances in the dependable accuracy department.

If you take a look at that, you will notice that you do not see any semis on that list. This includes George Gardner, who's shop currently makes some of the best precision ARs going right now. And he is still running one of his bolt rifles when it comes to one of the top matches in the land.

Sure, there are times and places where a Semi will serve you better. But for long shots and PR matches specifically, the guys that are in the know and can afford to shoot whatever they want are still running bolts.

Welcome to the forum casob. What exactly are you looking for? "Reference to the link of professional shooter?" Where are you at and since you mention wanting information from individuals more experienced than yourself, what is your experience? Filling out your profile with some more information on yourself will be a start.

As you might imagine, especially in the latest anti-semi automatic climate, that folks might be a bit skeptical about questions along this line from a brand new member with some unusual sentence structuring.

Re: Test: bolt action or simi auto

All I am new to the forum and I thank you for your time and feedback. I am looking to making a primary weapon purchase moving from standard weapons (rem 30-06 semi, 30-30 lever). As you can see that I stick with a weapon a long time. I am looking to making much more expensive investment to get a quality weapon. I was leaning towards the bolt action for accuracy and durability. Even within the bolt action world there are a great deal of choices and quality. At 43 yrs. old and I am looking for a primary weapon for SHTF. I have multiple pistols for home defense but not a serious rifle.

Again thank you for the feedback.
