Spent my second day at the range with friends working a load on my new 243 barrel.

its a 243AI .272 neck 28.5" Kreiger 4 groove, HVT contour, VAIS break, built by Doyle Englin of dixie guns.

ended up with these results.

3 shots @ 400 yards...

Re: Day 2 with new 6mm barrel, 243AI

The load he was shooting was a 105 berger hybrid jumped .100" over 44.5gr of H4831sc. They ran over the chrono right at 3000fps with an ES of 11.

They load I shot that day was a 180gr hybrid touching the lands over 55gr of H4831sc. They ran over the chrono at 2930fps with an ES of 7.

Yea, it is an eye opening experience when you start shooting a good 6mm, how well (and often easy) a rifle can shoot with a minimal of development.

I spent the day at the range yesterday with a friend who has "the best" F-Open rifles money can buy, all the right reloading gear, takes a ton of time gnat's assing his ammo, great shooter - and he could not get either a straight 284 or 7 RSAUM to produce a decent ES, no matter what he did. This was his 5th range session, 3rd doing development at 1000 yards, all shooting over the chrono. I could plot his shots just by watching the chrono readout. Very frustrating.

His comment at the end of the day? "If I was shooting a 6 Dasher, I wouldn't be having these problems".

Damn, what cartridge is getting the 180gr Hybrid going 2930 with only 55gr of H4831sc???
That is a highly efficient cartridge. 284 win? The short mags need about 5 more grains to get those numbers, unless you are using a barrel that is a meter long....

funny.

consistant neck tention, aneeling, 95%+ case filled all help ES.

we had the 105 bergers up to 3460fps (49gr of 4831SC) with my 28.5" but i think we were mangeling the jackets. not sure... wish they shot well faster.

9h, this is a little off subject but are those "7"s using a tight neck reamer. I have heard of problems with the tighter neck chambers not giving good bullet release on the 7's. Just a thought.
