Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44...$500 from Midway and a very good choice; I own two and they work well for hunting and range work.

Some other choices:

Weaver 3-15x50 EMDR
Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 SFP
Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12x44 G2DMR (Liberty Optics!)

Re: Need a new Scope budget is $800 max

SWFA SS10xHD is a very nice scope that will fit in your budget. However, you didn't mention if you wanted fixed or variable and the SWFA is fixed. I have the Mil Dot version and it's a solid scope.

Don't be in a rush, look at scopes for sale on the many gun related forum sites. Do your homework, review the seller and get a high quality scope instead of a $800 new scope.

Re: Need a new Scope budget is $800 max

I would look at,

Bushnell 6-24 FFP/SFP mil/mil good reticle choices
Sightron SIII 6-24 mil/mil moa/moa +1 glass & turrets
(Used)Trijicon Accupoint 5-20 mil/moa dual illumination

All are nice line of scopes in their price range with different strengths/weaknesses. I believe Sightron is a bit underrated and does not have the same brand recognition and loyalty as Bushnell, Leupold etc... It holds its own very well and should definitely be considered if second focal plane suits your needs. If buying used, might want to check if the warranty is transferable if that's important to you. I know Vortex is, but I believe Trijicon is to original owner and has seperate warranties for the scope and illumination.

Good luck-

If not in a total hurry, definitely keep an eye out on the FS forums (here and others). There are deals, but you need to be able to act quickly as soon as you see a deal for a scope in your budget within your parameters.

I just scored a Vortex PST 6-24x50 MIL/MIL FFP for $750 shipped so it IS possible. It has a very (and I mean very) minor ring mark that for $200 off street, I can live with.

Also, once you settle on a scope keep an eye on the sample list over at SWFA. I got a Nikon 4-16x44 Monarch for more than a third off because of a scratch on the barrel that ended up being covered by the ring. They also have refurbished Zeiss scopes that still carry factory warranty. I got a 6.5-20x50 that retails for $1,079 for $699. The list changes almost daily and features scopes from all the brands they carry.

I believe these are the best choices available. I would suggest either the weaver or the bushnell.

I agree, that's a pretty darn good list. Maybe toss in the SWFA SS 3-9x. If you're willing to wait (probably not), Vortex is releasing planning to release a 2.5-10x32 in FFP later this year for $800ish. Stay away from the Millett if you can. Very hit or miss.

Re: Need a new Scope budget is $800 max

I've shot at 1200yd with my NF F1 and didn't feel like I really needed any more magnification than the 15x. It's a lot of personal preference, but I think in general you think you need more magnification than you really do.

I second the SWFA 3-9x, they make really nice stuff. If you can live with fixed, the 10x is also a very nice piece.

I can't speak for anything else.
