Rifle Scopes Lemme ask the question a different way...

Re: Lemme ask the question a different way...

That pretty much answers it. The reticle needs to be thicker than normal at higher zoom so it can still be seen at lower zoom. I like ffp but i can take it or leave it. I can do my ranging at full zoom on sfp or do simple math and use half zoom to range.
What you are paying for when you get ffp its the mechanics. It is obviously a pretty complex thing to be able to change the reticle size in exact proportion to the zoom while still being reliable.

I dont think the reticle actually changes size,,it is just put on the other side of the magnification lens and it is magnified along with what ever you are focused on,,

Ranging is down the list for what I use FFP for. Holds for movers, wind and over and under are far more useful with FFP as you don't have to worry about what power you are on.

If you actually use the reticle for more than a center aiming point the FFP scope will be more useful.

I really like the idea of using a simple half/double relationship on the half scope power; however, make sure you verify the true half magnification location. I had two vari-x 3 that had mildots done by premier for 10x zoom -- the spot they marked did not align even close with leupolds marked 10x hash. This occurred on both 6.5-20x scopes they sold me.

I called to confirm. They said where it was marked is true 10x and the dial is just a general approximation.
