Mom's been wanting to get some chickens, dad says the "big cats" would just eat them. I sorta doubted him until yesterday when mom sent this pic of a "big cat" outside the house:

Perhaps the chickens are in fact doomed.

Beautiful animal. Chickens are smart. He'd only get a couple and they would figure him out and stay on the garage roof when e came around. Ringtails and coons are more trouble.

Re: that's a big cat

I say put the kitty and a herd of chickens in the octagon, pay per view. You could even put those fighting spurs on the chickens. Who ya got?

Mom is protected by 357 technology, the chickens not so much.

I wonder if an electric fence around the proposed chicken yard would keep the cat out?

Not sure of the real name for a ringtail, but they used to terrorize my chickens when I owned the ranch in Texas. They look like a cross between a cat and a huge squirrel with a big bushy ringed tail. They can move like lightning. Very secretive and mostly nocturnal.

Re: that's a big cat

Those have killed their fair share of joggers. Good Friend of mine got to bag one here in SoCal. One of only a few. He got real lucky in the lottery. Had a DFG guy and a cat guy that went with him. He did not get to keep him.

Re: that's a big cat

NY DEC still claims there are none in NY. Told a game warden that since there are none officially in NY, if I see one and shoot it, it really doesn't exist. "Oh, you better not do that!" But the DEC also claims that any in NY are escaped pets, and it's legal to shoot feral cats, sooo....Shoot, shovel, shut up.
