hey all, just curious if I could get some info on where PDog towns are located in Wyoming? I am going to visit my cousin and his family in Rock Springs, and I'd like to do some doggin' while out there. Thanks much.

We have the ground squirrels too, they are called "whistle pigs." I think the actual species is the Paiute Ground Squirrel. They are funner than shit to shoot, but they are small.
I watched the "Pigman" shoot dogs in Eastern Colorado...these guys were laughing so damn hard whenever they'd hit a dog, it really got me wanting to do it too.
I guess Eastern CO is calling too!

I live in the NW corner and it is the same here. 2 Summers ago I killed over 100 dogs in a day over the same colony. Last summer over the same colony I saw none. They are scarce right now.

Yeah Sendero_man is pretty much right. Doggin last summer was not what it has been in last few years. I used to hit the same 250 acre town every night after work (cause its only about a mile down the road and on family land
) and kill about 50-75 of them a night for about a month straight easy. Not so much last year. Even the other secret spots I know that are private and don't get shot at were pretty quite. Only really good shooting I did was over in South Dakota (again on family ranch
) where they were only shot at one time earlier in the spring by me. Hope they thicken up this year or next. I miss the good doggin days.

FYI too from central Wyoming west to Utah including RS we have White Tailed Prairie dogs they live in much smaller colonies, eastern Wyoming has Black Tailed Prairie dogs which is the same sub species found in South Dakota in huge colonies.

I tried to find places to hunt Prairie Dogs in that area two years ago. The ranches had problems with them but they also wanted $150 a day per gun. That was not within my means so they may still have those rodent problems.

Wow, not much of a problem if they still want the $150. Wife is a vet I'll pay the 150 and then chase the cows across the town. They will owe me before the day is over.

Our last PD hunt of 2012 we didnt see anything. Heard the plague killed em all off as well. Not worth the gas money until the populations rebound. Anyone have an idea of how long it takes for towns to pop back up after a plague? Im starting to get depressed about Spring now.

That could very well be the problem on the towns I frequent! I hit the one down the road from my house so hard 2 summers ago that you could smell the rotting carcasses before you even got there. Smelt like carcass dump for a slaughter house after a 3 weeks of shooting them every day for about an hour a go. Things were definitely a lot quiter in that town after that lol.

While hunting pressure surely does not help PD populations, yersenia pestis (plague) was inadvertently introduced into the western US in 1899. Prarie dogs have no natural immunity to Y. pestis, and develop no immunity as a result of exposure. As a result, prarie dog populations undergo boom and bust cycles where populations expand but then are wiped out when a plague epidemic occurs. Contrary to popular belief, prarie dogs are not the wild disease pool for plague as the mortality rate is much too high for them to sustain it (near 100%, where survivors are attributed to non exposure). Fleas are the known vectors for Y. pestis, however, the mammalian species responsible for the persistence of Y. pestis in the wild is not known.
Incidentally, New Mexico is known within the infectious disease research community as "The land of the FLEA and the home of the PLAGUE." There are researchers there that spend their entire careers monitoring prarie dog towns and collecting fleas for analysis.

You could try and find Rockchuck's aka Marmot's. I enjoy shooting them more then prairie dogs. You have to do a fair bit of glassing and snipe them from long distances on rock faces. These were taken not far from RS.

We had a fairly lare town here in NE Arizona that we had shot for the last several years. Last year the plague wiped it out. There are still several areas with good populations and numerous small towns. I was just in New Mexico and saw several large prairie dog ghost towns.
