Have been looking at rifle on the web since I decide to send my savage model 111 long rang hunter in .260 back. I am going to be spending some hard earned $ on my next rifle. I am a big fan of savage and have owned a couple of there rifles. Have been looking at the tikka t3 super varmint in .260 and just wanted some opinions on what I should go with the tikka or the savage model 12 LRP?

You won't find a super varmint in the States anymore. The sporter model is your best bet for a factory .260 if you can get over the color of the stock.

I have always been a fan of Tikka and their action. Some of the gripes people have had with them are a thing of the past. . CDI makes a nice bottom metal, Manners often has stocks for T3 actions in the "ready to ship" section. The triggers are good, the barrels are good, the action is GREAT.
I hadnt held one in a while and a good friend of mine just bought a used T3 scout in .308 with a manners stock and we have been playing with it. Its a fantastic design and shoots very well. After handling his, there is a .223 varmint in my very near future.

This isnt hating on Savage, they put together a perfectly good rifle and another friend has one that can shoot with our custom rifles right out of the box. But Tikka really has something special with the built T3s.

I agree with shabazz though, the super varmint may be very hard to come by and people that have them probably arnt selling very often.

Just got a sporter in 223, eurooptics has these for $1450 now, I bought this for the stock, had a master sporter and just couldn't get over the feel.

I'll agree that the stock colors are a bit "extravagant," and I've always disliked orange, but in person the damn thing is sharp.

That plastic bolt knob extension people seem to sneer at fits to me, it gives that extra bit of grip and heft the normal knob lacked for me.

It just works together for me, I wasn't afraid of the cost because I wanted the stock and didn't see the option to go trg and get a 223.

But I've owned a hell of a savage too

Sounds like you may be ready to build though... Buy the savage long range precision action, put it in your flavor of stock, spin on a great barrel and get your perfect.

It's not "better", it's different. Both rifles have the same potential when it comes to precision. It's up to you to decide which features better fit you and your shooting style. For example, the savage has an accutrigger and a longer, thicker barrel. is that a plus or minus for you?

Re: Tikka T3 super varmint versus Savage model 12 LRP

Savage has a 26" fluted truck axle, tikka 24" med-heavy.
Savage has a varmint style HS stock, synthetic, aluminum bedding block.
Tikka has a tactical/vertical grip style stock, it is laminate wood and fully adjustable. I like the tactical/verticle grip style stocks myself.
savage lrp has the target accutrigger which drops to ounces.
Tikka has a 2-4lb trigger. Both adjust easy enough for the avg. Joe.

Both have big knobs, the tikka is butter smooth, but I never had problems with my savage either.

Bottom metal on the tikka is a plastic, doesn't bother me, you'll notice pistols and AR's being made from "plastic" now, the durability is there.

Both are dbm. Tikka is a 2 position safety, bolt locks when on safe. Savage is a 3 position, you can use the middle safety position to cycle the bolt and still be on safe.

From the reports, you've got a chance at a decent 1,000yd rig with either.

So, the savage probably wins for durability, given metal and synthetic vs. wood and plastic, though you'll probably never have a problem with either.
The savage has a lighter trigger
The tikka stock feel wins hands down for me.
Tikka bolt throw is butter

Savage has a great reputation in regards to customer service, Tikka... I have no idea.

Re: Tikka T3 super varmint versus Savage model 12 LRP

Wish I had the bucks to do a custom build but that is not going to happen any time soon. I think for now I am going to go with the savage lrp. I like the trigger and have had great luck with savage in the past. The barrels are easy to swap out and known for their out of the box accuracy. I appreciate all the help.

Thank you

Buy the Savage LRP, sell the stock, get a Manners/McMillan flavor of choice and a few Dark Eagle mags. Done.
