Taking the Mosin Nagant out to 500 yards!

good shootin' at leat you can see the target from 500yds with irons. lol

what kind of drop does it have @ 500. just asking if you were spotting more like a forward observer with the old stuff.

I thought you meant mosin at 500 yds below the earth where they belong,LOL. I have a couple of them and the long rifles shoot better than the carbines.Anyone know how to drift that front site without destroying it? Have you shot any good hunting ammo through yours say at a hundred or so to see if good ammo makes a real difference.

I've been brown bear ammo with mine, haven't tried any match ammo yet. But I will throw this in there, after some mods I did to my mosin (trigger job and bedding the barrel) I achieved a 2.4" 3 shot group at 250 yards with the brown bear stuff. For the front sight I use a brass punch and I put a few layers of masking tape on the side of the punch that impacts the front sight. Works like a charm and no harm done to the sight. You need to hit it pretty hard at first to break the seal, then it adjusts easier after you get it to budge.

Mosins are very ammo sensitive. The most expensive stuff out there, or ammo that's sometimes touted as "Best" can shoot like shit in one gun, but the same gun will love the dirtiest, cheapest surplus available. There are a ton of factors involved.

Also, many people's misinformed impressions on their overall accuracy is based on experience only with refurbed rifles that may have shot out/pitted bores, horrible triggers and worn out or ill-fitting stocks, or what they've read on some biased, "American guns rule and everything else sucks" internet forum. Refurbs were thrown together from a collection of parts with little or no attention to fitting. So long as they headspaced, out the door they went (and, in some cases, even that can be questionable). But, if you get one that has a decent stock and bore and find the load(s) it likes, they can be very capable rifles. Hitting a man sized target with one at 500 yards can be done pretty consistently, as Grizz has shown here.
