Some time ago a fella that owed me some money gave me a Cobb 30-06 for my trouble. i always fondled it when I was at his house, my bad poker face I guess. It has a Larue Tactical scope mount a 10x mildot SWFA super sniper Troy backup sights and a 2 stage "match" trigger. I have gleaned a few things off the Internet about it but....Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth dicking with? If its more trouble than its worth I think I might sell it but I have no idea what to ask as gunbroker has them from 2500 to 4500 bucks.

It's a Cobb MCR semi auto. MCR stands for multi caliber rifle. Has a 24 inch stainless lothar Walter barrel. Cobb was bought out by Bushmaster and out of business. It takes BAR magazines. The muzzle brake is some sort of QD for a suppressor. I was told that Johns Guns made a suppressor for it. There is a cutout for one in the hard case. The thing looks like a big oversized AR. I have not shot it yet. If it shoots I probably am going to keep it.......I am ashamed but I have absolutely no idea how to post photos here.

A few years back Cobb made what was essentially a long action AR capable of handling the -06 family of cartridges. The function of the action was a little slower feeding the longer -06s, and it was made to use existing BAR mags as there was no inexpensive way of making up a limited run of custom -06 length AR style mags.

Knew two guys that had them, both worked fine provided the loads didn't get too far off the wall. Anything suitable for a Garand or M1A works fine, don't want to use slower powders as the pressure at the gas port will be too high and tend to hammer the carrier and buffer assembly.

Keep in mind it's an orphan now, no source for the unique parts. Otherwise it's an interesting piece.

    Rust,

Your recommendation is right on, except for the bit about slow burning powders. This is a carry over from M1 garands and M14s/M1As. These rifles are susceptible to port pressure issues due to their design.

ARs are not so limited. You can run whatever bullet/powder combination you want in an AR.

"ARs are not so limited. You can run whatever bullet/powder combination you want in an AR."

True up to a point. While you can run any 30-06 load, including loads that would wreck the op-rod of a Garand/M-14/M1A, I still wouldn't recommend some loads using heavy bullets with slow powders. The reason being that with the higher port pressure the carrier/bolt assembly cycles harder and beats the buffer assembly. With a high enough pressure at the port, the bolt can cycle while chamber pressure is still up holding the case against the chamber walls and the extractor can rip the rim of the case.

Basically it's the same as adding a suppressor to an AR, pressure is higher at the port. Which is the reason why some of the Whisper based silenced ARs come with an adjustable gas port for switching between subsonic (lower pressure) and supersonic (higher pressure) loads. Makes for more reliable cycling.

I went to the range and shot a few through her. I bought a couple of boxes of 168gr Gold Medal Match. The last two boxes. It's wasn't sighted in but I got it close enough to shoot some 3 round groups and it was under half an inch the best of three the worst was under an inch. I thought it had a 2 stage match trigger but I was wrong. The trigger blows! I think the groups would tighten up if it had a different trigger and some loads that were dialed in for it. But heck it still shoots pretty good. Oh, look at the size of that bolt! AR bolt on steroids!

    Excellent shooting DuneBoer!

Shoot more and take pics for us...rifle and group pics.

Also can you post more information about the rifle?

Do you reload? if so try the 168 AMAXs on top of H4350...you'll be surprised to see close to 2,950ft/s-3,000ft/s out of the '-06...well below max loads...and supersonic past 1,000.
