Since the birth of this rifle a few years back, it has taken it's share of verbal abuse by everyone. This is partly due to (I believe) Ruger's advertising and half-way designing it as a "scout" gun. It is not really a scout gun though after owning it and researching, but more of a "practical rifle" or maybe even a "lightweight carbine". I only got it a few weeks ago and did a ton of researching on the best option for what I wanted, which was: A short, lightweight, do everything, durable rifle that contained iron sights as well as an optic. I wanted it for hiking, camping, hunting, and the one grab and go rifle I'd take out of the safe for whatever. THIS IS IT. I have my heavy tactical rifles, and I have my lightweight hunting and general rifles in lever and bolt and even breech, but not an in between like this.
The only drawback was that since they only partially designed a scout rifle, it had the forward rail. I did not want this as I wasn't going for a scout setup. Then I found the XS rail and this solved my problem! It has a peep built in to the rear to keep use of iron sights and full picatinny all the way down the receiver. Mix this with Warne quick release rings, and I'm good to go with tons of options!
Why not TRY to make it a scout and keep it in the design concept? Well, what's the point of a forward optic for chamber access if you won't be loading through the top with something like stripper clips? Why did they machine standard scope ring attachment points into the receiver if they designed it to be a true scout rifle? Why a 10 round mag for something meant only for a couple quick powerful shots? Because it's not a scout rifle. Only wrongfully marketed as one which is what chapped so many asses of the true scout fans.
SO... That leaves it's true purpose! What are other options other than this? NOT MANY! I'd LOVE to have a Blackops rig, but can't afford the 3k+, and didn't want a heavy barrel found on some of the only other rifles this length which defeats the purpose of what I was after... So there sits the Ruger Gunsite Scout right in the middle. A perfect choice for an all around do everything rifle at less than 10lbs! I'm into it right around $1,300 with all the added accessories.
