After reading numerous threads I have a few questions and would like some advice/suggestions from you guys. I am brand new to long range shooting I have my first dedicated long range rifle and need to put some glass on it first off I want to be able to shoot to 1000 yds and my budget is $1300. The 2 scopes I've come up with so far is the SS 5-20x50 HD and the Vortex 6-24x50 PST and I would like to know what other scopes I should consider that fall in with these 2 scopes. Lastly I know there is a difference in the cost of these scopes so is the SS worth the extra coin and am I leaving out one that needs to be in the running?..Thanks for the help !

The vortex are nice scopes for a reasonable price, it also wouldn't hurt to check some in the Leupold MK4 line as they are nice as well. Even a first gen Bushnell HDMR would be on the upper limits of your budget and is a great scope for your purposes.

I'm glad you started this thread because I'm considering the same 2 scopes. After doing a decent amount of research I'm leaning towards the SWFA 5-20 but am still interested to see what others have to say before I make a purchase.

I dont know about the SS 5-20 but the Vortex 6-24x50 PST is one hell of a rest scope with the best warranty in the business.

I recently put the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA/MOA on my Rem 700 SPS-V. It has been a great add with all features working as advertised. With useful 20 MOA rail and rings you'll be under budget by a bit. I may step up in my next rifle but, for the moment, this is all I'll need. I recommend this scope unconditionally.

Mk 4 m5 tmr is a great scope. I really like the tmr reticle as even on max power its still very thin for a ffp. But they cost a lot more unless you get preowned. They are also light and compact. If you don't want to spend a lot get a weaver tactical 3-15 emdr. Its a great scope for the money. If you lived closer I'd let you try them out. SS, Weaver and mk4 m5.

For what it is worth, I have a MK 4 with M5 turrets and LOVE it. I also have a NF 12 X 42 NSX and love it. I wanted to see the differace between them for myself. Having said that, for the money.....I would tell you to go with the Leupold MK 4. They are both great scopes with great glass, however, the Leupold is at a better price point.

If you are lucky and know anyone who is on active duty you can also get a MK 4 from Leupolds military sales dept. They offer a real discount for our military boys.

Both scopes track perfectly.....both have great glass....both have awesome customer support......I am certain you will be happy with a MK 4.

I have both scopes and you really can't go wrong with either one. A lot has to do with personal preferences though...I much prefer the Vortex reticle to the SWFA mil-quad (a bit too busy IMHO). But the SWFA does have better glass and "tighter" feeling turrets. The SWFA is also several hundred more than the Vortex, and the PST does have the edge in magnification.

All that being said, if cash is an issue you can get the PST and put the saved money towards other accessories/ammunition. The nice thing about either scope is they hold their value well.
