I'm thinking of purchasing a 20 MOA scope base for my Remington 700 SA and I've seen prices from $30.00 to $150.00. I'm curious if a $115.00 Nightforce 20 MOA base is really better then a $40.00 base. If there is a difference, please enlighten me.

Thanks in advance.

The easy answer is, it depends.

I have used both and they both do the job but, if it is something I am going to need to depend on, I try to get the best quality I can afford. I would expect the specs for the more expensive bases to be better which would in turn make for better fitting rings.

Depends on what you're looking for. Issues such as poor finish, poor quality aluminum, inaccuracy in machining all come up. I've had a cheap rail that I couldn't get a repeatable torque. For someone that just wants a show piece or don't shoot much, it's OK but if you want long term durability, repeatability, not so much.

I've got a Murphy Precision stainless rail...I'd buy another and recommend anyone else get one.

I have 2 NF, 1 BO, 2 Ken Farrell, and 1 EGW. They all have done great but I would still strongly recommend the quality ones over saving a few bucks. Your really not saving if you have any trouble what so ever. Ammo is high these days. Good luck

I've had EGW in the past, and I run NF now. I prefer the NF since it's heavy steel, vs the feather-weight aluminum of the EGW.

Functionally, they both seem to work about the same I guess? Granted, the EGW was only on my rifle for maybe 200 shots, and the NF will STAY there. For all the rest of the shots.

IMO, if you are buying a NF scope, the NF manual claims if you use a NF base and rings with their scope there is no need to lap the rings.

YMMV.

Warne makes a great base and rings, and they are steel. Nothing wrong with Al, but if you have rifle adhd like I do, the constant install, torque, and removal can wear and gall Al.

Not that it matters, but here is an excerpt from the Nightforce NXS operators manual

"If we do not offer a ring/base combination that is compatible
with your firearm, please consider using Talley Mfg. or Warne
products."

Larue makes a nice one at $75.00. I recently put one on a build. I have used EGW with no problems on a hunting .308 - that gun has been knocked around and carried alot - I only have about 250 rounds through it, but no issues with it.

For the reasons mentioned above I have long since given up on the bottom end stuff. There is another rail that may be a good option. It has a level built into it. I think Extreme Hardcore Gear. I looks good. If any one has experience with that rail a review would be great. I am looking at getting one.

Like the scope discussions here, you do get what you pay for, but you don't always need the most expensive rings. Rings on my Barrett were $325 and the rings I ordered with my DTA SRS 308 were about the same. The rings on my Savage McMillan 22LR trainer were about $60 and hold my SWFA SS fixed 20X (bad eyes). Rifles that take a beating through recoil or activities require sturdy rings! Get the best you can afford for your needs and get out and start shooting.

I had a Warne on the first rifle and just ordered a TPS for the new rifle. I thnk steel over aluminum is the way to go for this type of equipment, but I do not think you need to break the bank to get NF.
