what is the heaviest bullet loaded for your 5.56

Re: what is the heaviest bullet loaded for your 5.56

77gr Nosler CC. I'm thinking of switching over to Hornady 75gr HPBT, though, for the increased BC.

77gr SMK and 77gr Berger will feed from a mag. 75gr AMAX and 75gr Berger will not. Anything 80gr or higher will not.

I shoot a 1:8.8 twist barrel and can stabilize 75grn AMAX's shoot them out to 1K with fantastic results. Matter of fact amongst my fellow LEO shooters there isn't a more accurate 1K yrd rifle amongst us when the wind is decent. Even in the wind it holds it own.

If you're still checking you should be able to shoot most anything above 65 grains other than Sierra 90's. I shoot 77 SMK's, Berger 80.5's (single load), and tried 75 Hornady HPBT (mid workup). PS. 77 SMK's are made to load to mag length, you may have a compressed load.

Re: what is the heaviest bullet loaded for your 5.56

thanks I just need heavy bullet to stabalize. Its shooting right around 3 inches at 100 yards. I am looking for something to stabalize, but after it shoots under one inch it has to feed out of a magazine

This doesn't mean the bullets aren't stabilizing. Your problem has nothing to do with bullet weight.

What?

You can't "over-stabilize" a bullet.

The bullets may not be accurate in your rifle, but that doesn't mean they aren't stable.

Re: what is the heaviest bullet loaded for your 5.56

3 inches at 100 yards sounds like something else going on. With 1 in 7 or 8 you should be able to shoot just about anything. I've ran 52 SMK, multiple surplus 55 FMJ, 55 Varmit Nightmare Extreme, 62 grain (SS109/M855), 77 SMK, and the Berger 80.5's.

How are you shooting groups? Sling without a floated barrel, what kind of set up? Which 55 grain bullet/load? Any other info a plus.

Dont believe what they advertize. Litz tested the various 75/77's and the 75's had the lowest actual BC, being around .360, with the 77 sierra's/Bergers being around .370 and the Lapua 77 Scenar an outstanding .402. There is a list somewhere with the true G7 values, I can't find it right now, but the 75 was the lowest. the 77 Scenar was highest, the Nosler CC 77 was second just above the sierra and Berger 77's that were tied.

HA! I found it, it was in another thread and you posted it... hmmm just went in a big circle... lol!
