I didn't know where to ask this seemed like the right spot. Some friends and I recently found a good place to stretch our shooting irons. Last time up my 308 got pretty warm on some strings of about twenty rounds plus .
We haven't done anything but target shooting but alot of the shooting comp videos seemed to be around ten or so rounds? What is your thoughts on this ?

Depending on your barrel contour and how far you want to push it. The .308 is a rather mild cartridge on the throat to begin with and usually 5000+ rounds is achievable barrel life. 20 plus rounds, moderately fast is not going to harm the barrel. But, when it gets to the point that the barrel is very hot to the touch, then wait a couple of minutes for it to cool and rock on. In the summer, account for longer cool down.

When my hits start stringing up and down the target, I let the barrel cool a bit.

If you can see the barrel start to sag you may want to slow down a touch, or if rounds are cooking off. Those are good indicators it may be time for a coffee break...
