I've bought AR500 steel targets from both JCSteel andBigDog Steel - both great vendors here on the hide.

I recently bought 4 sets of the 1/2" rebar brackets from JCSteel as I was tired of loading, hauling and setting up the wooden saw horses I had been using. The brackets appear to be made from steel pipe similar to electrical conduit and 1/2" rebar slips right in with very little slop. The brackets are fairly lightweight - lighter than what I was expecting, so we'll see how they stand the test of time. When I ordered them I was thinking theywere made from black iron pipe, but I didn't think to ask that question. At any rate, I'll see how well they stand up.

Wanting to keep the new setup easy to haul in my truck, taking up as little space as possible, I came up with using an old milk crate. I did cut a piece of 1/2" plywood to fit the inside bottom of the milk crate. All my targets fit inside. 1 – 12”square, 2 – 12” circles, 1 – 8” circle, 1 – 8” square, 1 – 6” square, 1 – 4”square. All are hung using grade 8 bolts and some old baler belt I cut into strips. Crate full of targets - about 50 lbs.

Secondly, after some brain storming, I came up with a 4" PVC tube, cut to 49", with a cap on one end, and a threaded cleanout cap on the other. Before gluing the caps/ends on, I drilled (approx.12" from each end) a 3/8" hole. I threaded some rope through the hole, put on a washer, tied a knot, and then tied up the handles using some oldscrap garden hose.

The handles make carrying the tube much easier - mainly for loading it up into my truck. The PVC tube will hold at least 5 sets of rebar. 1 - 20" length of 1/2" rebar cut into 5 - 4' lengths. I made up one extra set while I was at it just to have some spares. Weight of the tube and 5 sets of rebar weighs right around 50 lbs.

The steel targets were bought from past group buys fromboth JCSteel and Big Dog Steel - if you need any targets, both outfits are great to deal with and these targets, while freshly painted, have taken a beating from both .308 and .223.
I'll finish up with a couple pictures of all 4 stands setup with targets hung.

If I remember correctly, the rebar brackets with grade 8 bolts and a chunk of belt was $20.00. I requested just the brackets with no hardware, so they were around $18.00 per set, plus approx. $12.00 shipping - large flat rate.

I have similar rebar target hanging stands, and hauling the rebar is kinda a pain. Love the PVC rebar holder idea. Thanks for the pictures of your setup.

In the hope this helps someone else, here's a picture of my steel targets attached to their hangers. The targets angle slightly downward to help direct splatter toward the ground.

Looks good, but much more complicated than what I do. I use a 3' piece of rebar, with a hook welded onto it. This lets me pound the top of the rebar into the ground. I also welded a little foot to prevent it from spinning. These have held up pretty well, and I shoot 7mm Rem Mag

Very nicely done and super compact! I did something similar, I built it out of 2" steel tubing, the ends have a Y yolk that the legs and bar slide into with locking bolts, goes together quick and is super sturdy, not nearly as light as your setup though. One is for 12/10/8" plates and the other has 6/5/4/3/2" plates of Jake's (JC Steel) for a heck of a know your limits rack, but they can support any target.

Man that's a nice heavy duty looking setup you have there.

As shown in my pictures above, I'd probably only go with a max of 2 targets at a time and be fine. If I were to go with targets larger than 12", I'd probably opt for a slightly heavier setup myself. This go around was all about compact and easy to replace components, however a buddy and I are working on a site that will have more permanent targets and your design idea might be just the ticket. Thanks for posting!

If anyone is close in SE Minnesota (Rochester/Kasson area) and is in need of some fire hose or baler belt, drop me a PM. If you are willing to drive to pick it up, I'll hook you up for the price of a "thank you" and maybe a case of Busch Light!

photo.jpgAfter using the rebar stands I bought pre-welded for awhile, I decided to see if I could make one up myself. The one's I bought are still working just fine, I just needed a couple more, and wanted to see if I could make something as strong or stronger for less money and no shipping. For about $10.00 per set, I made this out of plain ole 1/2" black iron pipe. The shopping list is as follows: 2 - 1/2" elbows, 2 - 1/2" tees, 2 - 1/2" close nipples, 6 - 1/2" x 5" nipples. You could get by with 4" long nipples instead of 5". If you have a couple of pipe wrenches, or just one and a vice, these are easy to assemble. I made sure to make one opposite from the other, so that the back legs were wider than the front - using 4' sections of rebar they work great - just as well as the welded variety. This method also gives the user the ability to change the spacing of the legs to get the right combo of stability and height. Thought I'd pass it along.

I made mine using the FireEMTS method, unfortunately it cost about $28 and not $10 but still that is a big savings. I painted them with olive drab rustoleum and they should last a really long time as long as I don't shoot it them up. I guess even if I do it would be a cheap and easy fix. I have a bunch of 1 inch ratchet straps I am going to sacrifice for the target hangers they should hold for a season or two, I hope!!! I know I am going to hate the shards it is going to hold in them...
Each stand with rebar cost $48 and they will hold 2 AR500 1/2" 8 inch round gongs each ($123 for 6 shipped) comes out to a total $90 each target stand!

So in retrospect the JC Steel targets are a little more expensive due to shipping but weigh considerably less and travel easier. I suppose it is a wash, I wouldn't have minded either option but I would like to try JC Steel bracket sometime.

I'll post pics when the targets arrive!

Thanks for listening
Jim

Bchboy,

I'm surprised you had to pay so much for the pipe fittings........ Ouch! When I mentioned $10.00 per set, that was just for the black iron nipples and elbows. I didn't include the cost of the rebar, as I was able to get that for $6.00 per 20 foot section from a concrete contractor buddy of mine.

At any rate, hope the stands work out for you.

You might wanna pad the end of your PVC tube and prevent the rebar from sliding around inside. I used to carry long 6'x3/8" drill bits that weighed a lot less than rebar, and they'll bust through those caps pretty quick, particularly when braking. They work like slide hammers in there. Depends on how the tube sits in your truck I guess, horizontally it wouldn't have that problem but lengthwise, yeah. And I've seen another guy's bits bust through and fly out the front of his truck when he stopped at a light (some of us kept the tube inside the truck, but others tied it to the ladder rack). Luckily nobody was in front of him. The thread in plugs work better than the caps obviously, they're thicker, but they'll all break in time if they fly around in there for long. Just a heads up. Good luck, be safe.
