I am researching the most economical way to make an orthogonal moving target at ranges past 400 meters.
I so far have heard of helium filled balloons towed behind a RC vehicle. The downside is that this has a very limited range unless you boost the power of the transmitter. I am considering an I beam or 4 with pulley and motor but there are several downsides to this:

1: The time required to transport, 3 & 1/2 hours one way) set up and take down after each expedition.

2: The research and design needed so that the rail-pulley system works as wanted( goes side to side without stopping).

3: The distance of the target is fixed ( although I can move set ups) and target travel orientation is fixed.

Ideally I was thinking of a RC all terrain vehicle with decent torque to tow a all terrain trolley. That trolley would then have to be wide enough for stability but then need enough ground clearance so that it doesn't bottom out.

Is there a better method any of the SH community use to incorporate such target shooting?

We do movers out to 600 yd. using targets attached to a pole / stick and walk them back and forth behind a berm with only the target showing. Enlist some friends and keep them safe by using a berm or finding a deep enough ditch so they are protected.

We do movers at a little over 400 but its on a ranch and the owner uses sleds built with plastic pipe pulled on a small cable and powered by the pto of a tractor. Doesn't sound like you have the resources to do that. This way the speed is even so if you do the math you can figure your lead.

We use a firring strip with a IPSC Cardboard target stapled to it. Then we either walk it or run it in the target
pit.
