I helped out a buddy who needed money and ended up with a steyr SBS Tactical. The rifle has never been shot no scope mounts nothing. What I am wondering is if its worth making into a project? I am mostly shooting 7mm right now and as I understand it the barrels can't be changed.
Mostly looking for overall info from anyone who has shot one.

Re: Steyr Tactical Questions

It is a execllent rifle. I used to have a mountain version in 308. If you are going to turn it into a project, stock will cost(Mcmillian stock cost about $900 now), aftermarket parts, accessores is also difficult to find. So, play with your calculator before you do it. Beside that, SBS is a execllent rifle, there isn't much you can do to it.

Re: Steyr Tactical Questions

The stock does worry me a bit but the mcmillan would fix that. The biggest question would be the trigger, it's good but not what As good as my other rifles. That's the hang up, I'd be putting a couple grand into optics and a stock and still have a trigger that just isn't to my liking.
The more I read I relize there are less parts for these than when I started playing with cz's

Re: Steyr Tactical Questions

The double set trigger is awesome. And that becomes the problem
By the time I build this up I could buy an ssg 69 and have what I think is a cool piece of history.

Thanks for the help.

Have you been to fr.frog's website, he knows a lot about Steyr Scout rifles. When I got mine the trigger though good was a bit heavy for my taste but I found out how to adjust it from fr.frog. Result perfect. I can't see how these rifles can be substantially improved.

I have a Steyr SBS Tactical. It is too non-mainstream for me to consider doing much beyond leaving it stock. My trigger is light and smooth. The bolt action is custom smooth but the bolt lift is pretty stiff due to the cam design. I think the Safe Bolt System makes it a great candidate for a backwoods hunter.

DD Ross makes a 1 piece scope rail for it and that is the only thing I bought extra for mine.

Here is the fr.frog link tips and tricks.

Steyrs have probably one of the best fully adjustable triggers out there without having to spend all kinds of money on replacement or custom trigger jobs. Check Frog's Scout page and you will get a lot of good info.
