Not a new idea. I've been doing it for years. Just figured I would post and maybe help someone out. Sorry for crappy cell phone pics. They are good enough for purpose but that's about it :)

If you want or need a low profile gas block for your AR15 or Ar10 and you already have a standard one piece front sight/ gas block assy this may be for you.

I cut the upper of the front sight and bayo lug and ears for sling swivel off on a band saw. I did one with a hacksaw before but it took much longer.

Grind shape on top and bottom on a grinding wheel. Used a dremel tool for this before also.

Debur part. i rounded all edges with a deburring wheel on a grinder. Gets hot quick. It works quick though.

Installed and painted. Plenty of room in under my new longer free float tube.

 
It's actually much better than an aftermarket low profile gas block because the aftermarkets use an inferior set screw mounting method. Screws can loosen but the taper pins in a standard AR front sight base will never fall out.
