LMT MWS 20inch CL

I tested a LMT MWS with 20 inch CL barrel using 175 gr and 168 gr Federal Gold Medal Match and the 168's clearly grouped better with the 20" barrel. The 16 inch CL barrel I am now shooting likes the 175's Both barrels were/are able to go under the .25 MOA threshold. Consistent in .75 MOA groups. Count on sub MOA if you can relax and keep a good cheek weld without over gripping. Get a Slash's Heavy Buffer and rifle length tube, your choice of trigger upgrade, and consider a MagPul PRS stock if it is not cost prohibitive for you. Pulls it all together nicely.
Good to know, I think I am going to get the CL 20 and cut it down to 16. I think the regular 16 is a bit over gassed. My SR25 is setup for long range work, but wanted to get my MWS setup for close in and mid range .
I would not recommend cutting an LMT barrel down. The 20" is an all round fine shooting length which yields higher muzzle velocity for longer range applications. The 16" is better suited for use with a suppressor with less overall rifle length and less POI shift from the unsuppressed configuration. If you want a 16" CL barrel, hunt around, they are available. Sell the 20" to another shooter that wants it for a spare or replacement. Or not, just my .02

Also, the gas port is much further forward on the 20"/18" barrels than the 16" (which is under the hand guard). You may be able to chop the 20" to 18" but probably not 16". DSGarms has some LMT MWS barrels in stock. Or, just get on their list for the exact barrel you're looking for and sell your 20".
What are some of the solutions you all have found for the over-gassed issue on the 16"? I haven't noticed it being a problem on mine, but would like to tinker a bit.
I put in one of Slash's heavy buffer/spring combinations with an A2 stock. The brass isn't getting the snot beat out of it and the recoil impulse is nice and smooth.
Go ExtraHeavy Slash Buffer/Spring and have a Tubb Precision AR-15 Carrier Weight System on hand.
Or find out what adj. gas block and tube will work with your rig.

I know it's true because I watched it on TV. What channel {2, 5, or 11} I don't remember.
BUTT!!! I do remember my Dad telling me to tune it in and I had that radial dial half cocked to the next number.
I really don't know why someone hasn't figured out an adjustable gas block for the AR system that is as simple and
efficient as the FAL design. I'm not an ME so the reason must be in my face and that I've pushed electrons around
for a living just too long, to see it.

The LMT factory barrels will not work with any available adjustable gas block. This is according to LMT, as the gas port is drilled at some proprietary angle. Yes, the 20 is as over gassed as the 16. Maybe the 18 is better I have not tried that yet, I have a 20CL, 16CL, and 16SS. The best way I have found to deal with it is to simply load my own. Target shooting out to 800 yards or so I load 40.5 gr of varget under a 175. Runs a bit over 2400 and prints sub MOA mostly, with a nice little pile of brass within 6 feet of me. To stay supersonic out to 1000 I move up to 42.6 and run about 2570, but at that point I am engaging innocent bystanders up to 18 feet away with hot, blunt projectiles.
I have considered getting a heavy buffer, but the only thing stopping me is the fact that in well over 5000 rounds, I have had 0 malfunctions. Period. With handloads, factory, and milsurp ammo. I have loaded as light as 35gr. This has been the most dependable rifle I have ever owned. I am kinda scared to tinker with it.

Get an ARMALITE AR-10A4. Barrel is hand lapped twice before CL process.
Then get a NOVESKE SwitchBlock.

That is the same reason I am reluctant to start messing with with mine. I am very familiar with the Vltor A5 system for AR's and getting those tuned. I am curious if there are similar options for 308 variants, particularly the LMT's, that will soften the recoil while increasing reliability at the same time. I still intend on trying an H3 buffer in my LMT just to see what happens, but the way the Vltor A5 system functions has me looking down that path for my solution.
The MWS / SR-25 and AR-10 all have the same length buffer tube as the VLTOR A5. The gun also comes stock with an H3.
I appreciate all the info and advice. I am keeping my SR-25 with the 20inch barrel, until I can find K model upper. I can always have a barrel made too if I want or get one from LMT (I worked for LMT dealer and 07 FFL) I think i am going to get the 20inch and cut it down, and dimpled. I'll keep everyone posted on the results.

You are right, I typed the wrong number in. However, the Vltor A5 length tube does not give it the same functionality as the A5 system, since the LMT uses a standard buffer in the longer tube due to extra carrier length. I am curious if there is a system of components that are longer to give the performance characteristics of the A5 on an AR on the 308 platform.
Yes the rifle length gas system is what they do make the gun smoother and give it better performance.
