looking for $100-300 glass suggestions for my savage. New to LR shooting and would like something that I can grow with, without breaking the bank, all suggestions appreciated. Including reticle although I seem pretty set on mil dot.

Thanks in advance

The Nikon P-22 is a good scope for about $150. Mine is just a 2x7, but it is bright & clear, adjusts well and is fine out to about 100 yards. If you're doing general shooting this one is fine. If you want a target model with high magnification, look for something with more power and a bigger objective lens, 40 or 50mm would be best or the exit pupil will be too small to use comfortably (objective lens divided by magnification = exit pupil).... Human eye pupil in bright light is about 3-5mm, so an exit pupil of less than 4mm can be difficult to use for some folks, just depends on age, eyes, etc.

My Nikon P-22 is: 32mm/7 = 4.5mm exit pupil, or OK for me to see through easily. In low light it would be tough to use at 7x, because the human pupil can open up to 9mm so you only get about half the area to see through which your eye can need.

I put a center point 4x16 scope on mine, for $70 at Wally World. Didn't want to spend a lot and it got great reviews. The good thing is if you don't like it take it back.

I've been using the Tasco Target / Varmint 6-24x42 Mil Dot w/AO for years and they've held up just fine. Not saying I wouldn't upgrade if the price was right!

If you're game shooting with it, or targeting out to 100yd then I'd highly recommend a Leupold VX-1 2-7x32. I've got one on my Norinco .22LR and my brother has one on his CZ 452. They're excellent scopes and don't encourage you to try and take shots too far away due to their relatively low power magnification.

If you're looking to go competition later on and want a scope for that then I'd recommend something larger.

Leupold are great scopes at a reasonable price and they stand by their product with a lifetime warranty.

Cheers - boingk

Cabelas had a 4x14 BDC scopes in their brand for $149 marked down to $39 Because of a mistake on the box. I bought several knowing I could send them back. They are the clearest, nicest under $500 scopes I've ever seen. Clear edge to edge & very nice quality.

SWFA 6x super sniper. mil dot. The glass is better than other scopes in that price range. I bought the 6x fixed power for my savage MKII TR and viewing 4" clays at 250-300 yards is no trouble at all. (Consistent hits @ 300yds with a .22 is a different story!) Its not a Schmidt, but for a long range .22 trainer, it is sufficient.

Guess everyone has a favorite. Mine is the 6.5-20x44 Vortex Viper from Cameraland for $289 delivered. I have six of them. 65" of internal adjustment. Japanese glass. I shoot a match with targets from 50 yds out to 200 yds.

mine wears a Falcon Menace, had to clean up the dials and remove the excessive cheap grease for light coating of white lithium. Works great now.
that BSA looks okay too.
Normally with scopes and rings its buy once , cry once.
you might also want to look at a 20MOA rail

just for better info, have you found a Reticule you like yet? (BDC, Mildot, mil hash, etc)

Midway has the Weaver Super Slam Rifle Scope 2-10x 42mm Etched Ballistic-X Reticle Matte for 279.99 today..... Thats 200.00 off regular. Don't know how well it would serve a rimfire but the price is certainly good......
