Ok so I bought my first bolt gun recently ( sps tactical) and I'm looking to get my new A4 glass bedded get the action trued, larger recoil lug, and new barrel. I'm looking for a good company to do the work without a huge turn around time. Recommendations would be great please. I came across Phoenix Rifles. The prices seem good. Thanks for the help!

Phoenix Custom does great work, excellent turn around time, and are great to deal with. Longrifles, Inc. has done my last few. Ditto for them. Home run either way.

Precision Rifle and Tool in Mebane, NC. Great guys, quick turn around.

Any first hand experience with them blue printing and re-barreling your rifle? I am sending a 700 off to TX the day after deer season ends, but I am looking at a 8 month turnaround. A local smith and more reasonable turnaround would be ideal...but not at the cost of anything less than world class quality.

Phoenix rifles is good. So is RW Snyder Gunsmithing. So is GA Precision. So is Crescent Customs. So is Spartan Precision rifles. Jared Joplin at American Precision Arms (APA) does great work too. People can't say enough here about Mark Gordon at Short Action Customs (SAC). Accurate Ordnance is another good one. Russell at Scout Supply Company gets lots of kind words on this forum too. For bolt guns, these guys are GTG. I personally have used Surgeon Rifles, GAP, APA, and RW Snyder. My friend had a full build done by SAC.

Stay away from Superior Tactical Solutions and Tacticalrifles.net (David Rooney).

If you want your build done quickly, I would look into Phoenix Custom Rifles because they are all caught up on their backlog.

I have a couple of tips for you:

- If you true your action or put in a larger recoil lug, you won't be able to use your factory barrel unless it's rechambered ... at the cost of that, might as well just by a new match grade barrel. There are several places that sell match grade barrels if your rifle builder doesn't have any in stock (6mmAR, bugholes.com, etc.)

- Don't see any thoughts on bottom metal. What are you going to do there? If I was you, I would look into the Badger M5 or Surgeon system so you can use AICS mags.

- Your McM A4 should be pillar bedded, not just skim bedded as there is not an aluminum bedding block in these stocks. You may want to consider a Manners mini-chassis if you want something that is more "drop in and go", but you'll need to look into availability. Phoenix works closely with McM, so you may get better luck going that route.

Long Rifles, Inc. (LRI) has a quick turn around time with their group buy when your name is called but you may have to wait for your name to be called. You can still shoot it until then though so it's all good. I would say it's about 2-3 weeks from when they receive or so. My brother just had a Short Action Customs (SAC) build and it took about 3 weeks which is nice and quick also. It was a nice custom Tikka T3, one of his recent ones. Damn 10 day waiting period so we haven't shot it yet, but it is beautiful. Both companies are easy and great to deal with.

I have used Mark at Short Action Customs for my recent work.

My muzzle brake installed (shorten barrel, recrown, install and time brake, contour brake, Cerakote) took about 1 WEEK door to door.

theres a guy right behind north raleigh guns that knows a thing or two about a 700. he does all the work in house and the guy seems great! hes got a sweet machine shop with really nice tools, i have to think he knows what hes doing? i plan to let him clean up my 700 at some point. hes had a few REALLY nice rifles in the shop when ive stopped by. his shop is called ogr inc(ogburn gun repair). ive got the number if youd like. i have no affiliation, hes just a really nice guy and hes got a bunch of awesome parts on his shelves! ive only bought parts so far, but i wouldnt have any concerns with letting him work on my stuff... i actually look forward to it!
