I believe before the TIS slings, a lot of military snipers used old leather M1907 slings.

I have read a lot of ways to treat them, but was curious as to what the "official" way to do it was, since military slings would take more abuse than a safe queen sling, and im going for durability more than look.

Saddle Soap works well. I used 1907 slings on deer rifles for years in all sorts of weather, and they turned dark but held up well. They were buffed every year or two with the stuff.

yeah petroleum will eventually break the leather down. whatever you decide to you clean it with some saddle soap. It's really mild and won't damage it and apply a treatment that'll add oils and what not to it. I don't know about peanut oil first hand. I don't honestly know why it wouldn't be ok. Neats foot oil is essentially boiled and rendered cows hooves. I've heard of old times putting tallow on leather to preserve it as well. The obenauf's I mentioned is beeswax and other beehive stuff. Mink oil is good too but I've read it's hard on stitching. I don't know the truth of that and I've used it a lot on boots in the past.

Pretty much I'm of the opinion anything that's good for boots or leather saddles would be good for a leather sling. Run by a tack and feed shop and see what they have or maybe a boot shop or boot repair place and ask them.

When I was shooting High Power Service Rifle - all I used was Turner Saddlery Military Leather Dressing...it's the best there is.

I always used Neatsfoot oil but never tried the newer stuff because I switched to nylon for slings.

With Neats Foots it turns a rich pretty color and lasts about a year before needed to be reapplied. Makes the leather soft as well. Used this on my leather slings and baseball mits since I was a kid.

For hard use guns I use Nylon but leather is far better looking on a piece of art.

Champions Choice, they are a great place to buy precision shooting equipment, of all kinds. CC has a large supply of very high quality slings, including Anschutz, Gehmann, and their own mfg-good place for SMK's also.
