    Bergara B14R Heavy Ammo

Does it matter if rounds are over the speed of sound? The problem of transonic turbulence, which may affect the accuracy performance of some ammo, occurs when supersonic rounds slow down into the transonic range of velocities. The transonic range is between about 890 fps and 1340 fps. The...

Any 22LR that compare with Vudoo?

Since the post quoted (#18) is now over six years old, the question seems moot and quite belated. If they had their druthers many shooters would prefer to get the right thing first. ;)

Need starting BCs. SK RM, Wolf MT

As a general aside to the question, knowing the BC value of different rounds is only part of the picture. Those interested in trying to calculate or predict trajectory and POI based on MV and BC should be aware that, wind aside, there is at least one other important factor that will influence...

Lapua Center-x Vs Eley Tenex visual compare

More visuals are shown below. These have been posted elsewhere in the past. Eley is either on left or top.

    SK S+ deviation / Rimfire

Ammo branded specially for "Pistol" is a niche ammo, even though anyone can shoot it. As a niche ammo, it's priced accordingly. Pistol ammo has no requirement to be a higher grade or to be better performing than "rifle" ammos. SK Pistol Match is graded below SK Standard Plus.

    SK S+ deviation / Rimfire

According to a Capstone official, SK ammo is graded in the following hierarchy. For SK varieties nominally rated 1073 fps it's SK Rifle Match, SK Standard Plus, SK Pistol Match, and SK Magazine. For SK varieties nominally rated 1106 fps, it's SK Long Range Match, SK Biathlon Sport, and SK...

    SK S+ deviation / Rimfire

The chronograph shows an ES of 93 fps for 65 rounds of SK Standard Plus, with an SD of 25 and a spread of 913 - 1006. The temps were about minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit ("+\- 15 F"). The cold temperature explains the slow MV of the rounds (it doesn't take long for a warm round to cool). The...

    deviation in cold .....5 degrees

Comparing small sample sizes often gives unreliable data. When it's colder, all rounds will be slower. When it's warmer all rounds will be faster. With large samples, the standard deviation and extreme spread should be similar in both.

Round count to determine the best lot# ?

A lot of .22LR match ammo usually is about four to six cases in size, sometimes a little less or more. That's 20,000 to 30,000 rounds. In a .22LR match ammo population measured in tens of thousands, how many should be looked at before making an evaluation? What level of confidence is...

22 LR weight feedback, does it helps or is a myth?

All rounds are not always equally good, especially midgrade ammo varieties. As noted by Calfee and others, so long as ignition is good and headspace is safe, headspace itself is not critical to accuracy performance. In other words, headspace doesn't matter enough that sorting ammo for it will...

22 LR weight feedback, does it helps or is a myth?

I erred in saying cull with regard to lousy rounds. The purpose, nevertheless, remains to identify the good rounds from the lousier ones. If sorting by rim thickness is supposed to select rounds with a certain range of rim thicknesses to match a particular headspace, those rounds that don't...

22 LR weight feedback, does it helps or is a myth?

If sorting is intended to cull the lousier rounds from those that might shoot well, is there much to be gained over buying ammo right off that shoots well? It's not as though sorting makes all rounds better. Say some sorting method identifies 50 better rounds out of 100 mid-grade rounds...

Why would my groups open up suddenly?

Regarding the "old timer thing" about not cleaning, it would have been not uncommon to hear that only a few decades ago from older shooters themselves. Those who shot .22LR in the first half of the 20th century would very likely have been aware of the time when cleaning .22LR bores was a...

Precision rimfire state of the Union for 2025, help get me up to speed please…

Chronographs don't measure exit timing. No one can know whether or how much changing from free recoil to shouldered changes the muzzle velocity. The MV of a round is not known before it's fired, no matter how the rifle is held or not held.

Precision rimfire state of the Union for 2025, help get me up to speed please…

Indeed. If a setting is good for any .22LR distance is puts into doubt the PC explanation for how a tuner does what it does, unless PC is valid only up to a certain distance and something else explains how tuners work beyond that. The suggestion that a Garmin (or any chronograph) can record...
