I'm the same way. I can touch a piece of plastic and it will rust. I use Strike-Hold and have had good luck with it. Kroil and Balistol work great also.

Yeah, the rifling starts half way down the barrel on the Remingtons.
I've had good luck with the 168 Matchkings. I recently got some Berger 168 hybrids but haven't shot them yet. They look like they will shoot good and are a good bit longer...

First, I would float the barrel. Make sure you have ample (I like about .080) clearance between the barrel and stock.
See how it shoots and then maybe bed the action.

I just got finished with mine yesterday. I made the top with fout pieces of 3/4 plywood glued with F26 and screwed together. I used 2x4s ancored to the floor and screwed to the wall studs.
This baby is stout. I could set a Sherman tank on it and do oil changes.
