Can anyone tell me the difference between the Hornady 168 ELD M and the 168 A MAX . I thought the A MAX's were being replaced with the ELD M's , but I see a few online stores are selling both. The A's are a bit more $$

One difference is the BC. The ELD M is a little slicker at 0.523 versus 0.475.

They have a different tip material and were redesigned when changing to the ELD-M line so you get a higher BC from that. The 168 ELD-M is a much better long range bullet. The limited AMAX bullets of any caliber are around mostly for contracts to be filled. If given the choice go ELD-M.

The tips did not literally melt, they underwent thermal deformation in flight that altered the ballistic coefficient.

What he said but I thought we got this all hashed out in the 8 years since the ELD came on the scene. It's not a fancy way to say melt but a more accurate explanation of what is happening. It's not melting like a candle. It's slightly deforming.

And the ELD is more than just a different tip. ;)
