With the Sig 516, apparently the Gen 2 is still being supplied to some contract customers, so Sig still supports them. Not so with the Gen 1 version.

Do any of you have a Gen 2, and do you like it?

i’ll jump in on this….

those are nearly identical to the caracal right? i have a caracal 11.5” and love the design, mostly. not over gassed at all. still has the snap of a short stroke piston though, even with cases falling at 3 oclock with 557 ammo on the suppressed setting and an H buffer.

i know its not the same as having a sig but if thats the design you are after, its a good option.

I've looked at a new Caracal 816a2 piston gun, and it was reportedly designed by the same 1 or 2 guys who were part of the HK 416 design team, who then moved to Sig for the 516, MCX, Spear, etc., and then reportedly they moved to Caracal for the 816a2 piston gun. Unlike the Sig 516, the Caracal has a higher top like a POF piston gun, perhaps for a slightly different piston to action pathway?

I have a 516 14.5 upper and it shoots super smooth. Unfortunately I've only had 100 or so rounds on it so I can't speak to any durability or reliability issues but it runs butter smooth both suppressed and without a can. If I find a 10" I'll buy it also.

Got one when they were priced pretty aggressively. I paid under $600 OTD. At that price it was a no brainer. Picked up a used Sig suppressor for something like $200 (plus the $200 tax) and slapped a Primary Arms 4x optic on it. Gun has been 100% reliable and is a ton of fun to shoot. With AAC 77 gr ammo I'm hitting 5" steel plates and prairie dog silhouettes at 200 yards with nearly 100% consistency.

So it's reliable, soft shooting, great with suppressors and surprisingly accurate. Not sure how they are currently priced, but I'd say if under $800 they're worth a look.

You got a new 516 upper, or new complete 516 rifle, for under $600?!

I got 2. (both gen 1) Love 'em.
One is the standard 14.5 that I had a Surefire SOCOM closed tine flash suppressor P&W on to make it somewhat ATF proof.

The other is one I had shortened to 11.5 for my SBR.
That one lives bedside with the can on it.

Both, as you can see, have had their handguard changed out to one from Midwest Ind. This did help with the weight a bit, but like Milf Dots, I'm generally not one to care much about every little ounce... as evident by my big honkin' Comp M4s.

If people are such weight weenies, they can always get a quality padded sling (Vickers/BFG CAS, or Kyle Lamb's VTAC) that'll make that extra 1/2 to 1 pound disappear. The real pu**ies can get an m249 sling with the bigger, thicker pad.

I own 3, 2 14.5s and and FDE 16". the FDE is for parts for the 2 14.5s. $499 for the 2 uppers and 1200 for FDE.
Due to sigs lack of support for the platform, I will NEVER buy another sig product. EVER.

To be honest... the only reason I picked up the second one (the one I kept at 14.5) is for parts. I love the first one I got, but like you am not too happy that a major company like Sig wouldn't support something they had designed, and put out in the market. Especially when it's a good product to begin with. After shortening it, my 11.5 is damn near perfect as a close-in weapon with the can on it. I need to be able to keep it running.
