I saw a post on facebook of a guy claiming he can shoot 1/2 inch 10 shot groups at 100 yards all day long! I have been shooting 22lr a very long time. I called him out on this claim. I know how many variables go into this. Mostly ammo! He is claiming that is not that big of deal!! Am I just getting old and not able to get those results? I get alot of 1/2 inch groups! But get alot of 1 inch and greater groups! What are your experiences?

BS. Most 1/2”@100 con men use 5 shot groups, and carefully select the ones to post.

It is not readily repeatable with a 22 rimfire. I can do sub MOA 5 shot groups at 100yrds semi regularly with top level ammo and a rock steady platform. Others can do much better, But to do so they do it with a machine rest, hand-built custom Bench rest rifle with select ammo and likely not a 10 shot group.

You stated you are getting old and read posts on f&@#book? Well that’s your problem…..

Half-inch ten-shot groups with .22LR at 100 yards all day long is a fantasy. It's such a tall order that it's impossible.

Getting one or two half-inch ten-shot groups at a 100 out of ten groups is a good day. It's quite a challenge to shoot ten consecutive ten-shot groups that are all under one inch.

Anyone who once a day shoots three or four consecutive ten-shot groups averaging under .700" is having a very good time at the range indeed. A lot of things have to go very well for that to happen.

That is same as i have experienced! The guy has been claiming to me that it isnt that hard to do!! Im tired of arguing with him🤣🤣
It's really simple. Put up or shut up. He can do 1/2" 10-shot groups "all day long?" Ok, give him a real break. He only has to do five 10-shot groups. You bet him $100 (or $1000 or $10 or $1) he can't do it. Make sure you see $$ up front, because it will be YOUR money.

I shot a little rimfire match yesterday. After it was over, the local guys invited me to try their "100-yard dime challenge." They put a dime in a little frame thing that holds the coin in place behind a dime-size hole in a steel plate. Shooter gets unlimited sighter shots, then five shots to hit the dime.

I hit the dime first shot. After five sighter shots. Of which three would NOT have hit the coin. Or fallen in a 1/2" group. I didn't move POA. Held straight up for all (wind was calm).

A few years ago, a buddy of mine sent his Vudoo to Lapua's Mesa test center, where it set a 10-shot single-group record of 0.4" center-to-center at 100 meters (109 yards) with Midas+. So he bought three cases. He showed me the test report. Sure enough, there was that unicorn group. The other groups...? Yeah. Typical 0.75+ inches.

In reality, sounds a lot like my claim that my $550 Weatherby Vanguard in .25-06 will put ten shots in one hole at 1000 yards (all day long) Just ain't sayin how big the hole is I'm shooting at. (actually it shoots well above its price class but that's another story for another day)

I own a Centerfire Precision rifle that the previous barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor, with a good man behind the trigger could probably match his feet. However, I'm happy when I hit my coke can sized silhouette 10 times out of 10 times at 100 yards when practicing stages. And that's with a multi thousand dollar Vudoo actioned PRS rifle shooting ammo it favors.

I've heard this kind of B/S most of my life but have yet to see it or know guys I trust, who've seen it happen. If he is all that he would not mind you or someone you trust showing up the next time he is shooting & watching.

Been shooting these little pea shooters fairly religiously now for several years, I did a group like that once... ;) (actually a couple times now) A Turbo, Shilen, Nevius Chamber, GRS, Zeiss, TT Diamond, Midas+, in the neighborhood of my 75th 22rf build... just a few key ingredients, the wind, sun, moon, solar flares, tilt of the earth were just right, but all day long? 🤣
Kind of like shooting a disc with .001" runout in our bottle cap game, seen a couple, after 4 years of shooting it, got one last week.

People start telling tall tales as kids, trying to impress other kids. If you're a semi-aware kid you start seeing the gloaters and big talkers for what they are. Some of those kids never grow up and they talk about the fish they caught, the deer/elk they shot, etc. It's never even remotely true. They're just trying, super-hard, to impress someone on a topic where they cannot match the talk.

I just somewhat laugh out loud when I hear/read a .22LR claim of 1/2" 10 shots at 100 yds, even once. "All day, every day" is the bench-fisherman's "the one that got away" nonsense. I bet plenty have done it at 25 yds and tried to pawn it off as 50 or 100, though. On the internet.

"even once"
They are possible but not frequent or common. Certainly not consecutive, let alone all day long.

I've shot many hundreds of ten-shot groups at 100 yards since 2021 when I first began. Few have been under half-an-inch. But there have been at least a couple.

Below are the results with one of the rifles I shoot. The caliper size is the outside dimensions of the group.

From last summer on June 23.

From 2021

From last summer again, but not quite under .500".

Of the 200 ten-shot groups I've shot since late April this season, none has been smaller than .769" outside dimensions. This was with a different rifle that is new to me.

grauhanen -- the reason for the "somewhat" was because I know it's possible, but on the internet, more likely to be a snow job on a 25 or 50 yds group. That's very nice shooting in your pictures.

What would you say ammo consistency plays in the likelihood of 10rds being tight? Is it only with certain loads you can expect this to be even possible? Even when you're dialed behind the gun, is 10 rds consistency a common event in rimfire ammo?

We have had a few pass thru here over the years that got to the point we put a hard call out on them.
One asshole called H2O man (I called him water boy) was Smith M14 this, Smith M14 that.
Long short I offered port to port all expenses paid to a @j-huskey HardRock match. Limo, air what ever he wanted, all he had to do was show up & shoot the match. Course he pussy-ed out. Then Frank aka @Lowlight got into it, offered free entry to the bash or cup (don't remember which). He had more excuses that grains of beach sand. Finally it came down to all his M14 sticks were either broken or in for barrels. Not a problem bub I've a XM 21 that was just re-barreled, load worked I'll supply dope book, plus there is enough time to do a 5320.20 & get it approved. So now your good to go right? Got real quiet after that. Then IIRC Frank banned his ass.

Was on another forum (what the old battle rifles.com morphed into) & guess who showed up? Being the asshole I am, I waited until he spread his shit out real good, then linked all the Hide threads over there. I was promptly called his internet stalker, and the mods took down the links, which I re-linked then got banned for.
Oh well into every life a little rain must fall,...was it worth it? Yes it was and I'd do it all again if need be.

Just retort you shoot 1/64” 30-shot groups at 200 yds with 22 shorts all day long and twice on Sundays!

None of the match ammo I've shot at 100 yards has the consistency to produce more than the occasional exceptional or extraordinary ten-shot group at 100, if that can be taken to mean under .500" center-to-center. Of the few sub - .500" ten-shot groups I've seen, all were lone groups on a page with three or four groups in total.

The ammo isn't consistent enough to repeat those kinds of groups. That's why it's safe to say that half-inch ten-shot groups at 100 is a fantasy.

Below is the target sheet that had the best group shown above (.636" outside-to-outside).

In my experience grades of ammo such as Midas + produce more small groups at 100 than Center X, but Midas is not necessarily more consistent. The best I've seen is three ten shot groups at 100 that average under .700". The lots that are really consistent must be very rare indeed. I've never seen one.

Here it is:

My absolute best target ever shot indoors at 50 yards, tuner testing Anschutz 1710 off a one piece rest. 5 round groups with a lot a center x that rifle liked. Best group of 5 shot that day measured .090” (EDIT ADD: BEST GROUP WAS .072” ctc WHEN DOUBLE CHECKING NOTES AND PHOTOS) Was interesting to see how groups opened up/ closed and moved around the POA with tuner setting changes around nodes. June 2019.

Move that same rifle set up outdoors for ARA competition and the best score I ever got was a 2350, way short of the 2500 possible. ARA is worst case scoring in that if it breaks the line you get the lower value. 100 point target area on a 25 shot card is 1/2” in-diameter. That is off a concrete bench with a one piece rest and 5 wind flags set up down the lane. Tried shooting it at 100 yards once for giggles and it was somewhere around an inch and a half IIRC for five rounds, I wasn’t impressed enough to take a picture and was disappointed.

Half an inch at 100 all day, outside, I would love to see it in person, but have my doubts. Would be even better if he says he shoots it standing offhand. :). It’s hard enough to do this at 50 yards, 100 consistently is far fetched

With a .22 1/2” at 50 all day long is probably doable. At 100…. Well… maybe.

Rimfire from 50-100 is a big jump.

Good target rifles designed for 50’ small bore can easily extend to 50 and group 1/2 MOA if things are really favorable.

100… that’s the difference between 1/2 moa at 200 and at 1000 with a center fire. Sounds easy. But is not.
