Hi folks. Happy 4th. Somewhat of a novice here.

Doing a custom 6.5 creed bolt build and am using the following:

Action- Aero solus short action.
Barrel- Proof TL3/SR3 short (part #113059).

I noticed the following, using Forster gauges:
Go gauge: closes
No-Go gauge: closes (my concern)

*The aero action is supposed to be compatible with zermatt/origin prefit barrels.

Please note that I only hand tightened the barrel on when I checked. Is there a chance that it will gauge properly once torqued correctly? What’s my next step?

Much appreciated.

Check it at proper torque.

It may still close on a no-go, and that can be ok. It should not close on a field gauge. You can layer a bit of scotch tape on the back of the no-go to see how much more it needs before it stops closing.

You have the wrong barrel. The Origin is different than the TL3 short. You need to return it and get an Origin prefit.

Thanks for the reply. I figured that may be the case. Do you guys have any recommendations of any quality prefit barrels, which would fit the solus action that you recommend?

I’ve never had one I know there is a thread on here that talks about them.Just type it in the search and if it were my gun I would eather go with a proof prefit or a pva prefit barrel Josh does super great work I’ve a few of his barrels and they’ve all been shooters. I would probably also check Altus shooting solutions for a prefit for your build too.

Why don't you just return it where you bought it?

PVA has great barrels if you wanted to look elsewhere.

I had it in maybe 4-5 weeks after I put the order in. I had a cert for 500$ off so the barrel only cost me 65$ out of pocket. Had them cut a saami 6.5cm chamber in a mtu for a kelbys action. I have a around 700 rounds on it and it has hammered with everything except 142 smks. It hated those bullets.

@StraightJacketArmory is a commercial supporter here and also does prefits as another option if you were interested in looking at other options.

Update: well folks, I’m back. With another problem and looking for answers.

I returned the previous proof barrel and ordered a custom fixed shoulder prefit barrel from preferred barrel blanks. I ordered it to be compatible specifically withe the “aero solus” action. Put them together and it won’t close on a “go gauge”. So either there’s something wrong with my action or the barrel chamber was cut too short. Thoughts?

I’ve used these Forster go/no-go gauges in the past without issue.

Does ammo fit?

I tried 3 different factory loads and none of them would allow bolt to fully close.

I guess there could be an issue with the action but from what I’m reading on other forums, it’s more likely to be a barrel chamber problem.

I’m gonna call aero and PBB tomorrow. I’ll let you know what they both say. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

If you have any feeler gauges put em between the barrel and action shoulders, see how many thou you need to extend the shoulder to close on the go, that will let you know how far out of spec the chamber is.

So basically unscrew barrel slowly, a little at a time, until bolt is able to close on a go gauge. Once I find that distance, I will measure the gap from outside the action face to barrel shoulder, in order to determine how much additional shoulder material is necessary?

Ok I think I’m understanding correctly. This would be under the premise, that the barrel chamber is in fact cut too short.

You can either chamber the go gauge, screw the barrel in until it hits and slip feelers in to find what fills the remaining gap
Or
You can insert a feeler, screw the barrel down and see if the go gauge chambers, if not back out to the next size larger and repeat.

However you do it, yes, since the go gauge is too long to chamber you are operating under the premise that the chamber is short on headspace so you need to see how much the barrel has to be screwed back out to come back into proper headspace between the barrels chamber and the bolt face.

People that claim to have issues with barrels and companies are always the ones that never assign an actual number to the issue. If you can tell them “hey, this chamber needs .008 more to allow a go gauge to chamber” then you’ll get much more in response than if you just say “my chambers bad send me a new one”.

Why did you not just get a Proof Origin barrel? You are making your life harder it seems. I would get a hold of PBB and tell them about the issue and see what they say.
I’m actually helping my friend with this build. He didn’t like how the carbon proof looked with the stock, so we went with an all black barrel. From what I’m reading this could’ve happened with many pre-fit barrel manufacturers, including proof.

Great advice. Thank you.

Not really but good luck. Do what Spife said and hopefully it will help.
