Maggie’s Scam by Haydenj88

It sucks that you were scammed and $1000 is a good chunk of money to lose...

With all the recent comments, threads, advice, recommendations, I don't understand why people keep falling for scams. I also don't understand why people would ever use anything other than USPS Money Order, or "Cash in a face to face meeting".

Wanting something too much makes people vulnerable.

NEVER post a WTB ad.
NEVER do a deal with anyone who didn't post an ad in the PX.
The list goes on and on.

Agree with the above, but I will say the amount of high level scammers has really grown. They actually know what they are talking about (to an extent) provide good to great pictures etc etc. If you can’t meet in person do a FaceTime at the least. I know FaceTime is a newer thing, and some people hate it, but it is what it is at this point

The large majority of any actual "Scams" here could have been prevented by simply having both buyers and sellers demand a video chat to see the folks, see the items, see the place etc, and confirm the details of payment BEFORE any payment gets sent or received.

+ a whole bunch of others.

If somebody can be on here buying or selling something, they CAN get their asses on a video chat.
Pretty much any modern mobile phone has a camera on it.
Pretty much any modern PC or laptop that could be accessing this website can have a cheap webcam attached.

I dont know the details of either side of the argument . dont know who did what .

You doing a transaction of a Grand or more-$$$ and the seller has a Profile of being on the SHcom for only 6 months, with Very Little forum interaction, and It an 'out of State' transaction .
Common sense say's to ask for references of some kind ?
..

Does PayPal buyers protection protect you from individuals?

Even if he paid via goods and services, PayPal likes to freeze accounts and funds for anything firearms related as that's against their terms of service. The TOS is very vague for firearm related transactions and says using PayPal for "firearms, ammunition, or certain firearm parts or accessories" is prohibited. They do not explicitly define what parts or accessories are prohibited, so it gives them a lot of wiggle room to deny a refund, or suspend your account and freeze your funds.

My experience years ago with a temporary PayPal account suspension and fund freeze (thanks to a buyer who didn't understand "no comments" and instead copied and pasted the URL for my PX ad here into the PayPal transaction comments) is they apply that "certain parts and accessories" definition very strongly in their favor if the transaction has even the slightest whiff of being firearm related.

Also, while buying or selling with a low post count member certainly merits some caution, remember we all started here with 0 posts. I've sold plenty of things to nice people with accounts less than 6 months old with less than 10 posts, but I did some extra homework to make sure they were legit. However I am much more cautious about buying from new, low post count members though.

With older accounts with established history being hacked, account age and post count isn't a guarantee of a safe deal either.

I sent him money too. He gave me a tracking number, weight looks correct. Hopefully the stock is inside. I'll know when UPS shows up tomorrow and update. Hopefully he does the right thing a credits you. Did you pay with a CC on PP? Will they offer protections even if PP won't? Pit in my stomach at the moment.

@richidaho I got it and its exactly as described in his ad. Did he contact you or did you DM him from the listing? If you want to DM me the PayPal address you sent to we can at least see if those match. Hayden went above and beyond to get me this in time for getting the the range Friday so I'm currently believing it might not have been him who scammed you.

Let me know what works for you. The stock is 6 feet from me with the shipping box showing it coming from a different state if you'd like any photos without doxxable information. If a more established account in a different forum makes it easier for you to get on board with feel free to dm me at the same user name in reddit. I have mid level flair and over 5 years.
